John2 Barlow, (John1) son of John Barlow and Lydia Bryant. He was born September 15, 1804, and died June 22, 1840 in Barlow, Copiah Co Mississippi, burial in Old Pleasant Valley Cemetery, aka Millsaps Cemetery, Copiah Co Mississippi

He married 1) Mary 'Polly'4 Millsaps (William3,Thomas2,Thomas1) on March 09, 1826 in Copiah Co Mississippi. The daughter of William and Rebecca Webster Millsaps, she was born July 10, 1808 in Pendleton District South Carolina, and died October 19, 1884 in Copiah Co Mississippi, burial in Old Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

Mary married second, Daniel Cranfield November 16, 1848 in Copiah Co Mississippi.   He was born c1805 in Louisiana, and may have died before 1870.  Daniel had children by his first wife, who is thought to be Mary Callender, but apparently none were born with Mary.

One of Daniel's daughters, Mary Cranfield, married Elijah Kendall Wright. A son, Jared Hoyt Cranfield, married Grace Agnes Barlow, daughter of Henry Barlow and Miranda Hayman, Henry having been married first to a sister of Mary, Charity Millsaps.

Mary and several of her children are buried in the Old Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Copiah Co Mississippi. Tombstone inscription:
'Mrs. Polly Cranfield died Oct 19, 1884 in her 77th year'

Extracted from 'The Southern Star' Gallatin, Mississippi   July 11, 1840  Page 57:
Died at his residence in this county a few days since, Mr. John Barlow, aged about 30.   Mr. Barlow was for a long time afflicted with scrofu.

I did not find Polly in an 1870 census, and in 1880, she is living with her daughter, Levinia, and husband, James M. Matthews.

William Bryant Barlow, born April 18, 1829 in Barlow, Copiah Co Mississippi, and died June 04, 1869 in Copiah Co Mississippi, burial in Old Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Copiah Co Mississippi

He married Frances 'Fannie' Eagen June 18, 1867 in Copiah Co Mississippi.  After William's death, Fannie married John Dunning, a brother of Hugh L. Dunning, second husband of William's sister, Martha.   Her death date is unknown, but she is buried in Poplar Springs Cemetery, Copiah Co Mississippi  I was unable to locate John Dunning in 1870, but found them in 1880, no Barlow children, the Dunning children in the home are most likely from a first marriage of John, their ages 19 and 17.  John is buried in the old section of Hazelhurst Cemetery, next to his first wife, Martha J.

Louisa 'Matilda' Barlow, born May 12, 1833 in Barlow, Copiah Co Mississippi, and died December 25, 1853 in Barlow, Copiah Co Mississippi.
She married George Lester Decell January 27, 1851 in Copiah Co Mississippi.   He was born June 13, 1832, and died 1909.
Matilda and George had sons:
James A.4 Decell, born November 27, 1851, Copiah Co Mississippi, and died 1925  He married Sarah Isabelle Deer She was born February 26, 1851 Pike Co Mississippi
John Eldridge Decell, born 1853, and died 1917.   He married Florence Chiles    These boys were living with George and Matilda in 1860.

After Louisa's death, George married Matilda Jane Stanfil Barlow, who had previously been married to John Newton Barlow         Click his name for more of these families

She married 2) Henry Cato January 08, 1857 in Copiah Co Mississippi.  He was born April 02, 1808 in SC, and died July 25, 1885, burial in Union Church Cemetery, Jefferson Co Mississippi

I was unable to locate Henry and Rebecca in any 1870 census.  I found Lewis and Josephine, ages 13 and 11, living in the home of their teacher, REA Stewart, Jefferson Co Mississippi.

He married Corrie Alice McLean December 23, 1891 Jefferson Co Mississippi.  She was born February 21, 1868 Jefferson Co Mississippi and died July 17, 1951, Hattiesburg, Forrest Co Mississippi

She married William M. Deason April 17, 1849 in Copiah Co Mississippi.   He was born c1824 in South Carolina.    They were probably both deceased by 1900.

4.  Charity Barlow, born November 06, 1831 in Barlow, Copiah Co Mississippi, and died December 16, 1906 in Copiah Co Mississippi.   

She married Herman Bomar Mayes July 29, 1851 in Hazlehurst, Copiah Co Mississippi.  He was born May 20, 1819 in Copiah Co Mississippi, and died June 06, 1891, Copiah Co Mississippi.   Both are buried in Hazlehurst Cemetery -Old Section- Copiah Co Mississippi

5.  Mary 'Tine'3 Barlow, (John2, John1) born April 17, 1835 in Barlow, Copiah Co Mississippi, and died October 20, 1900 at home in Hazlehurst, Copiah Co Mississippi.

She married 1) John Prentiss Matthews June 06, 1862 in Copiah Co Mississippi.  The son of John Redding Matthews and Mary Ann Newell, he was born September 27, 1840, and died November 06, 1883.  Both he and Mary are buried in Matthews Cemetery, Hazelhurst, Copiah Co Mississippi.   Tombstone reads: "Murdered by E.B. Wheeler with conspiracy by J.L. Meade, chairman Democratic party."

She married 2) Henry Walis c1892

Information sent by Haskell Waller in 1997 states: 'The Millsaps book says Mary married second, Leon H. Matthews, a brother of first husband and if I remember right, both Matthews were Sheriff's or law officers.'     I was unable to find Henry or Leon in a 1900 census, to verify the name of their wife, nor could I locate Mary anywhere.   In 1910, I found Leon, he is aged 57, and a widower.

Shot and killed by Erastus Wheeler

The killing was related to the politics of reconstruction. Matthews was in power with the backing of black voters. Wheeler represented the white political structure.

Article from the Copiahan dated November 24, 1883:

"We learn that Mrs. Matthews, widow of the late J.P. Matthews, moves to Oxford this week in order to be with her sons Meredith & Suggs who are attending the University at that place. She is a cousin of the Reverend Dr. Wheat of the University."

Article from the New Orleans Times Picayune concerning the US Senate investigation:

"Mrs. Matthews, widow of J.P. Matthews, was sworn in.   She lives at Oxford with her family having left Hazlehurst where she lived up to the time of the death of her husband. Had lived in Hazlehurst and was born and raised in Copiah County.

After her husband was killed, a paper was sent to her home warning the family to keep quiet and make no effort to avenge the death of her husband.

Witness testified to the resolution already introduced warning her husband to stay home on election day. A mob of seventy-five men came to her house on the day before the election and John McLemore brought the paper into the house to her husband. She had seen the mob riding around and had heard them firing guns.

Witness knew Erastus Wheeler. He had often been at her house and had eaten at her table with her husband before the murder. Knew of no quarrel or ill feeling between her husband and Wheeler.

Mrs. Matthews is a very handsome woman of perhaps 50 years, brunette as to the eyes and hair, with a red and white complexion. She broke down several times and wept in giving her testimony.

She testified that her husband was a good and charitable man, kind to everybody. The widow and her two daughters were dressed in deep mourning."

E.B. Wheeler was found not guilty and set free. Blacks didn't vote again in the county for 80 years.

The Senate Hearings were held in New Orleans in the Saint Charles Hotel apparently starting on February 15, 1884. The Senators were from Massachusetts, Louisiana, Deleware, Maine, and Wisconsin. I don't know how long the hearings lasted.

The trial was held in Hazlehurst in Copiah County where the killing occurred. The trial was in April and May of 1884, I believe. The jury was eleven whites and one black. The defense attorney had been a General in the Confederate Army. Erastus Wheeler was the Town Marshall at the time of the killing.

J.P. Hargraves was the Sheriff who was in the mob with Erastus riding around at night. A number of citizens left town so that they wouldn't have to testify. There is mention in the paper of two men who filed affidavits against people in the mob. They were L.H. Matthews and H.H. Barlow.

James Meredith4 Matthews, born June 26, 1863, and died March 03, 1900, burial in Matthews Cemetery, Copiah Co Mississippi.
He married Ola McConnico.   The daughter of Sam and Margaret H. McConnico, she was born July 1863 in Mississippi.   She and James had two sons, Sam McConnico Matthews, born March 08, 1892, and died December 13, 1947 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co California, and John Print Matthews, born August 25, 1899, and died between 1920 and 1930.  In 1900, Ola and J.P. are living with her parents in Carroll Co Mississippi, showing her a widow, having been married 11 years, with 2 children born, and 2 living, but Sam is not in the census.  I could not locate any of them in 1910.

Mary Louvinia Matthews, born June 17, 1864, and died March 30, 1921 Hazelhurst, Copiah Co Mississippi.    She married a Mr. Harwood in Meridian Mississippi.  I was unable to locate them in a 1900 census. In 1910, she is divorced, and living with her brother, Simon in Copiah Co Mississippi. She had been married 1 year, 1 child born, 1 living, her nephew, Jesse Print Graves, age 12, whom she had adopted.     In 1920, Mary L. Matthews is still living with her brother, Simon

Simon Suggs Matthews, born January 08, 1866, and died September 25, 1925.   He did not marry.   In one record, I find mention that Simon Suggs Matthews is the father of Percy Ashley Matthews who married Burnita Sheldon, but I believe that record to be incorrect after checking thru census records, even though, I could not locate Simon in a 1900 census.

Jessie Lucille / Lydia Matthews, born June 30, 1867, and died September 29, 1899, in West Lake Louisiana, burial in Matthews Cemetery, Copiah Co Mississippi.
She married William Seymour Graves in April 1894.   He was born August 15, 1866 in Mississippi, and died February 14, 1914 in Meridian, Lauderdale Co Mississippi, burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Orange Co Texas.
I could not locate William in a 1900 census.    One son born:  Jesse Print Matthews:   He was only 2 years old when his mother died. His father was a traveling salesman for Nichols Coffee Company out of New Orleans, Louisiana, and was unable to care for an infant son. Mary L. Matthews, sister of Jessie Matthews, convinced William Graves to let her adopt Jesse Print and raise him in Hazlehurst, which Graves agreed to. After Mr. Graves died, Mary Matthews had Jesse Print's last name changed legally from Graves to Matthews   (I think this was in 1915.)

6.  Louvinia3 Barlow, (John2, John1) born December 09, 1836 in Copiah Co, Mississippi, and died February 12, 1899 in Wesson, Copiah Co Mississipp, burial in Wesson Cemetery, Wesson, Copiah Co Mississippi.

She married 1) Dr. Hugh L. 'Seth' McLaurin December 21, 1856 in Copiah Co Mississippi.  Dr. McLaurin was born December 18, 1817, and died October 14, 1862, burial in Old Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Copiah Co Mississippi

She married 2) James Meredith Matthews October 11, 1865 in Copiah Co Mississippi.  A son of John Redding Matthews and Mary Ann Newell, he was born February 07. 1836, and died June 12, 1897.  He was also a brother to John Prentiss Matthews who married Louvinia's sister, Mary.

Also in the household are guards, cooks, and prisoners, apparently their home is being used as the jail.

7.  Martha E. / Louise3 Barlow (John2, John1) born December 25, 1838 in Barlow, Copiah Co Mississippi.  She probably died between 1875-1880.

She married 1) Dr. William James Strahan September 02, 1855 in Copiah Co Mississippi.  The son of Asa Strahan, he was born June 07, 1817, and died January 09, 1869 burial Old Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Copiah Co Mississippi

She married 2) Hugh Dunning on October 12, 1871 in Copiah Co Mississippi.   Hugh, born July 27, 1825 in Ireland, and died February 27, 1889, had previously been married to Elizabeth M. Davenport, who had died in 1869.   The 1870 census of Copiah Co Mississippi shows him to be a widower with several children living next door to John and Mary Barlow Matthews.  I was unable to locate Martha or her children in the 1870 census.  Again, in 1880, I was unable to locate Hugh or Martha, and Martha's children, including her eldest, Mattie Dunning, are listed as living in Copiah Co with  the oldest, WJ Strahan as head of household, which would make me assume Martha is deceased.  Checking cemetery records, I find that Hugh did not die unitl 1889, and is buried along side his first wife in the Hazelhurst Cemetery, (old section), Copiah Co Mississippi.   Note:  Hugh Dunning was a brother to John Dunning who married Fannie Eagan Barlow after William Bryant Barlow's death. (William, brother of Martha, above)

John Barlow Strahan, born 1861, and died January 1935.  He apparently did not marry.  In 1920, at age 54, he is living with Joseph W. Hester, name spelled Strayhorn.

Martha 'Mattie'4 Louvenia Dunning, born January 14, 1874, and died November 15, 1959.
She married Levi Quitman Wright, Sr.  The son of James Wright and Harriett P. Tucker, he was born May 25, 1862 in Franklin Co Mississippi, and died September 24, 1924 in Hazelhurst, Copiah Co Mississippi.    Both are buried in the Hazelhurst Cemetery, (new section), Copiah Co Mississippi.

8.  William Wiley Fore born February 20, 1848, and died September 24, 1913.

He married Prisilla East October 21, 1868 in Copiah Co Mississippi.  The daughter of Joel Walker East and Catherine Loftin, she was born January 29, 1852, and died November 30, 1917.  Both are buried in Rosehill Cemetery, Lincoln Co Mississippi.

Martha Ann 'Mattie' Fore, born August 17, 1888.
She married Eghut Burt Sessions on September 21, 1912.  The son of Francis Marion Sessions and Margaret Jane Wright, he was born September 28, 1884, and died December 25, 1961.  Both are buried in Matthews Chapel Cemetery, Copiah Co Mississippi.

Charles Lloyd Ford, born c1871.  He married Gertrude Cato, and had 2 children:  Charles Wesley and Ruth Ford.
(I believe he is enumerated in the 1910 census with his parents, and with his uncle, William Fore.)

Prentice Clifton Ford, born September 20, 1879, and died February 04, 1952.
He married Gertrude Hackney on December 21, 1899 in Copiah Co Mississippi, and had children:  Mary Gertrude, Kathleen, Henry Wesley, Evelyn, and Dorothy Ford.

Henry Grady Ford, born August 30, 1890.
He married Genevieve Lucich on August 01, 1910.  She was born Novewmber 01, 1894 in Lincoln Co Mississippi, and died June 28, 1954 in Jackson, Hinds Co Mississippi.

11.  Mary Jane Mayes, born October 08, 1855, and died March 22, 1949, burial in Hazelhurst Cemetery, Copiah Co Mississippi.

She married John Scott Decell on September 01, 1906 in Copiah Co Mississippi.  John had previously been married to Ella Ryan, and had several children. The son of John J. Decell and Rebecca Wheat, he was born in March 1850, and died in 1931.   Mary had no children.

12. John Barlow Mayes, born August 28, 1857, and died August 26, 1939, burial Hazelhurst Cemetery, (old section) Copiah Co Mississippi.

He married 1)  Myra Oatis.  She was born April 1855, and died September 25, 1906, burial in Hazelhurst Cemetery, (old section).   They had no children.

He married 2) Mary Julia Watson between 1910-1920.  The daughter of Thadeus C. Watson and Mary Adeline Millsaps, she was born April 12, 1877, and died September 15, 1965, burial in Hazelhurst Cemetery (old section), Copiah Co Mississippi.   They had no children.

In 1880, John B. Mayes and his brother are enumerated in the home with their parents, but are also enumerated together in Gallatin Copiah Co Mississippi, their ages 22 and 14, living next door to W.J. Strahan.

15.  Mattie4 McLaurin, born 1857 and died in 1945.

She married Henry M.  Hollingsworth.  He was born 1848 and died 1929.  Both are buried in Wessson Cemetery, Copiah Co Mississippi

17.  Mary 'Mollie' Louisa4 Strahan, born September 1856, and died in 1918

She married John Thomas Hester. on November 25, 1884.  The son of Ephraim Hester and Mary Ann Price, he was born April 1857, and died in 1915.  Both are buried in Smyrna Baptist Church Cemetery, west of Hazlehurst, Copiah Co Mississippi

Joseph W. Hester, born July 1892.  He married Sallie Wade.  In 1920, they had 2 children:  Frances, age 4, and Joseph Jr., age 2.  Also living with them is John B. Strahan, spelled Strayhorn, age 54.

18.  Neal Alexander Strahan, born November 02, 1862 Copiah Co Mississippi, and died October 07, 1945, Grenada Co Mississippi

He married Florence Emma Taylor on December 16, 1887.  The daughter of Eliakim Benedict Taylor and Verlelia Dorcas Green, she was born June 18, 1865 in Gallatin, Copiah Co Mississippi, and died October 06, 1902 in Copiah Co Mississippi.

Annie Ophelia Strahan, born August 04, 1890, and died July 04, 1951 in Grenada Co Mississippi.

He married Tina Velina Hansford on June 11, 1924 in Akron, Summit Co Ohio.  The daughter of Anderson Scott Hansford and Mary Jane Smith, she was born May 12, 1885 in West Virginia.  They had no children.

Verlelia Dorcas Strahan, born July 03, 1900.
She married Herbert Drennon of, Moscow, Jefferson Co Arkansas on December 29, 1920 in Copiah Co Mississippi.  They had children:  Herbert Neal and Phillip Rodney Drennon.

19.  Herbert Euell Strahan, born November 01, 1864, and died March 14, 1908.

He married Isabelle Griffing in September 1889 in Copiah Co Mississippi.  The daughter of Daniel McCall Griffing and Mary Elizabeth Haley, she was born July 12, 1870.

She married George B. Nelson and had children:  Martha, Margaret, Isabelle, and George B. Nelson
