Bryant P.S. Barlow and Sarah Ellen /Eleanor Rush<< Sarah Ellen Rush Barlow, contributed by Gary Barlow |

BRYANT P.S.3 BARLOW, son of WILLIAM BRYANT
BARLOW and NANCY HARRINGTON/HERRINGTON, was the 11th child, and the fourth
son, born in 1836, and died June 24, 1863 in Vicksburg, Warren Co Mississippi. [the 1850 and 1860 census suggest that Bryant's birth year would be c1836, which according to other records, is the same year his brother, Christopher Columbus was born. In reality, I believe that Christopher was more likely born c1834, but and that the records were confused throughout the years] He married SARAH ELLEN / ELEANOR RUSH c1858. The daughter of John and Sarah Rush, she was born c1830, and died March 19, 1904, burial in Barlow Cemetery, Herchenhahn Rd, Macedonia, Forrest Co Mississippi. Gary Barlow writes of Ellen: In Bryant's letter, he addresses her as Eleanor but in most later records (tax receipts, etc.), she is referred to as Ellen. My grandfather said she was full Indian but I believe she was half Indian, as census records show that her mother, Sarah, and father, John Rush, came from South Carolina. At any rate, the Indian ancestry is pretty obvious in her features. |

On May 03, 1862 he enlisted in W. T. Baylis Company of MS Volunteers to serve for 3 years. The May to August, 1862 muster for Company "B", 7th Battalion of MS Volunteers shows Bryant as "present". It is believed that Bryant was wounded at the battle of Corinth, Mississippi and was either carried or followed his unit to all of the succeeding actions that they fought. The November-December, 1862 muster shows Bryant as a patient, General Hospital, Enterprise, Mississippi. The muster dated June 20 to October 31, 1863 shows one entry "Died - Vicksburg, June 24, 1863." We believe Bryant died of Black Tongue (Typhoid) disease. He was 27 years old. He left behind his widow, a son 4 years old, Wyatt, and a son almost 2 years old, William Green. In 2011, Ernest Lowery Barlow informed me that Bryant P.S. Barlow is buried in the Cedar Hill / Soldiers Rest Confederate Cemetery, 1918 Sky Farm Ave., Vicksburg Mississippi, and that he has visited the grave many times. I went to that cemetery but it was late and I did not locate his grave, though I had not known the cemetery was so large. There was a section specifically for Confederate soldiers from all southern states, but his grave was not in that area. |

Gary Barlow, gr2 grandson of Bryant P.S. Barlow, has sent a transcription of a letter written by Bryant to his wife, whom he called Eleanor in March 1863, while he was in a military hospital in Enterprise, Mississippi. He had been wounded a few months earlier at the Battle of Corinth (Miss.) and soon after he wrote this letter he was sent to rejoin his unit at Vicksburg, where he died in June 1863, just before Vicksburg surrendered to Grant's Union Army. This letter was in the possession of my grandfather, Oliver Ulysses Barlow, who was Bryant's grandson. Having already been weakened by his wound and months in the hospital, Bryant's death was likely hastened by the brutal conditions those last few months at Vicksburg, which was under siege and completely out of food and supplies by the time it fell. |

The State of Miss., Clark County, Enterprise, March 9th, 1863 Dear Wife, with the help of God I am permitted to seat myself to drop you a few lines to inform you the present state of my health. It is tolerably good except I had cold and I hope that I will get clear of it some and I hope these lines will reach your hand safe and find you and the rest of the family well. The health is some better than what it has been in some time. They are not really as many that are sick here now for as fast as they get up they send them to their command. And I expect that I will be reported before many days and sent to my command and if they don't send me away I will report myself for duty myself for I have got tired of this place for war pain is not good enough to suit me for if a man gets what he wants he will have to buy it and pay three prices for it. And you ought to see me wanting to leave and if it was in my power I would come home. I have been thinking that I would get to come home to see you before I went to my command but it is out of my power to get a furlough for they have orders to furlough no man. It matters not what his condition may be; it is all the same with them. And as to think of coming home they are no use in it while things stand as they are now. I have no such calculation of ever returning until the treaty of peace is made, and they are no telling when that will be done. They are but one thing that cheers me up and that is I have a helping God to put my trust in that I may go through the troubles and trials of this war. And if it falls to my lot to fall by the ball of the invader and depart from this unfriendly world I hope to be ready to meet my God in paradise. And I hope if we never on earth are permitted to meet again we will be able to meet in paradise where they are no troubles to be seen; where they are nothing but peace, joy, and good tidings for ever and ever. I have been here two weeks in town and this is the third letter I have wrote to you but have got no answer. I shall continue to write to you every few days for I know you want to hear from me and I would be glad to hear from you all the time and know how you are getting along and it would be some pleasure to me to be at home with you and the children where I would not be under so many hard masters. For I tell you, dear companion, there is no pleasure to be found here. I have not drawed my money yet but they say that we will get it this week. We have a very cold spell of weather now, too cold for planting. I think you had better not plant nothing until it gets warmer. I know your chance is very bad to have to make a crop. If it was so that I could be there to help you, I should be some better satisfied than what I am at present, but it is out of my power to tell you when I can be there. The Lord only knows. Eleanor, I believe I have nothing more for this time. Give my best respects to Mother Rush and all enduring friends and receive a ten fold portion to yourself. Nothing more but I remain your affectionate husband until death. B.P.S. Barlow To Mrs. Eleanor Barlow So fare you well, dear wife, fare you well for awhile We will soon meet again if kind providence smile But while we are parted and scattered abroad We will pray for each other and trust in the Lord. |

PURSUIT OF PYRENESS
A true World War II story of how Archie Roland Barlow, Jr. escaped, when the plane was shot down, while flying on a mission, just over the English Channel to the Pas de Calais area of northern France on January 21, 1944 and succeeded in reaching Spain and eventual freedom. He spent three months hiding out in France and two troubled trips into the perilous Pyrenees Mountains. During World War II members of the French Underground or Resistance organization assisted several thousand Allied airmen who had been shot down in escaping from German-occupied France. This 120 page, nonfiction book is well written, interesting reading, and is available for $20.00 from: L. B. Wright |

Warm heart, warm lap Local woman quilts for the children of T.C. by Lydia Senn Calhoun Times, Calhoun Georgia Oct 15, 2009 Aline Barlow has been quilting since the mid 1970s. “It’s something I just picked up, just to have something to fill my time,” she said. Barlow has quilts on display in every color and theme one could imagine, in her living room in Calhoun. For the past few years, she has been sending them to children being cared for at T.C. Thompson Hospital in Chattanooga. The idea to share her quilts came after hearing a telethon benefiting T.C. Thompson on the radio. “I wanted to do something to show I was thinking of them,” Barlow said. She creates quilts designed to bring a smile to the faces of the children, featuring trucks, butterflies, sports themes and ballerinas. Barlow creates these warm squares of comfort on her 1950 model pedal operated Singer sewing machine. “A lot of quilts have been made on that sewing machine,” she said. Barlow, who was one of 16 children, learned to sew from her mother. “She used to make string quilts and sew across the back, I thought I could do the same thing using strips,” Barlow said. Her method is unique in that instead of the traditional square, she uses strips of fabric, which are then sewed together to create a square shape. This year Barlow has made 101 quilts; about half of them have been sent to T.C. Thompson, and the other half went to a nursing home in Hattiesburg, Miss. Barlow makes the quilts out of pure benevolence, but she does admit she likes hearing from the kids. “Every now and then I will get a thank you note, and that is nice,” she said. Barlow also thinks of the staff at T.C. Thompson, with each package of quilts she ships to Chattanooga, she also sends a packed of pincushions she makes by hand. Barlow, who is in her mid 80s, says she will continue making quilts for the children as long as she is physically able to do so. “As long as I have eyes to see and hands to sew,” she said. |

Gary, son of William writes: William Green Barlow, and the crew he served with in World War II, taken June 6, 1944, just after they returned to base in England from their run on D-Day. His plane was the lead bomber in the D-Day invasion, leading the way in that historic battle. He never talked much about the war for a long time but in his later years, he would talk more about it and went to some reunions and ceremonies honoring his crew. That plane was called the Red Ass but after the war the Air Force was a little embarrassed by that and started referring to it as the Bungay Buckaroo. It is preserved in the Pima Air Museum in Tuscon, Ariz. My father died this past October. In the photo, he is second from left on the back row, under the number "11." I've also attached an Air Force article that verifies the plane and crew's role in D-Day. And, yes, I asked him a few months before he died if they were scared on D-Day. "Shoot," he said. "We were just a bunch of kids. We were scared as all get out." His crew flew 25 missions in the war, going through four planes and sometimes barely making it back alive. |
8th Air Force News, August 1993 D-Day To Be Featured in 1993 Air War Symposium The title of this year's Air War Symposium at the Chicago Reunon will be "D-Day: The Biggest Mission Ever Staged." One of the featured speakers will be Colonel Jacob J. Brogger, who led first group over the enemy coast on D-Day, the 446th Bomb Group, 20th Combat Wing, 2nd Air Division. The Lead Navigator on the mission, Major Michael Puczan, will also participate on the symposium panel. Other speakers will be William Brinson reporting on the activites of the 315th Troup Carrier Group assigned to the 8th Air Force on D-Day, and Robert Bumgard of the 18th Weather Squadron who was assigned to SHAEF Weather Central as head of the Long Range Forecasting and WInds Aloft Section. Symposium Chairman Bob Vickers says he is still trying to locate several other speakers familiar with the top-level planning and command aspects of D-Day. As formation commander, Brogger rode as copilot with Captain Charles Ryan of the 704th Bombardment Squadron (see photo below). The lead aricraft was named "Red Ass" which was shown on page 16 of our August 92' issue. The formation carried 1,000 and 500 pound pound bombs and its target was enemy deense installations at Vierville on the French coast. The Zero Hour for D-Day was 06:30 hours, when ground troops were scheduled to hit the beaches. The 446th was briefed to attack at Zero Hour minus 30, or 6:00 hours, and the first bombs were actually released at 05:56 hours, aimed with radar through cloud cover with unobserved results. The first squadron dropped on PFF and all other squadrons followed in trail. The annual Air War Symposium is sponsored by the 8th Air Force Memorial Museum Foundation, John Greenwood president. Petal, Mississippi Services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday at Carterville Baptist Church for Mr. W.G. "Bill" Barlow, of Petal. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 Tuesday at Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home., and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery with military honors. He died Sunday, October 9, 2011, at Hattiesburg Health and Rehab. Bill Barlow was born in Petal, Mississippi on November 6, 1922 to Mr. and Mrs. O. U. Barlow. After graduation from Petal High School, he enrolled into the Army Air Corp (the precursor to the modern Air Force) and was stationed in Denver, Colorado where he met Nordeen Renae "Dee" Sanders. Bill and Dee were married on October 6, 1943 in Georgetown, Colorado. Of note is that Bill and Dee traveled back to Georgetown in December, 1999 and located their original marriage certificate in the basement of the Georgetown Courthouse. Following their wedding, Bill deployed to England to serve as a crew member on a B-24 bomber, the Bungay Buckaroo, and survived over 25 missions in the European campaign. The bomber he served on led the 448th Bomb Group, the lead group on the D-Day invasion and is now enshrined at the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona. Upon Bill's return home from World War II, the Barlow's resumed life together with Bill working with his father as they and a crew of relatives and friends built houses in Petal and Hattiesburg. He continued in this business until he started Barlow's Radio and TV Service where his wife Dee served as the bookkeeper and office manager. After some years of operating that business, he and Dee took over the ownership and operation of Petal Dry Cleaners, with all sons working with their parents. Their business prospered, even surviving a fire which destroyed much of the complex. Following the sale of the clearers, Bill worked for the city of Petal as their first building inspector, and later on the staff at Timberton Country Club. Bill was a Christian and he and his wife were active members of Carterville Baptist Church, where he led the congregational singing on Sundays until they moved their membership to Temple Baptist Church in Petal. He later moved again to Petal-Harvey Baptist Church, serving as a deacon there. After a number of years at Petal-Harvey, he and his wife returned to Carterville Baptist Church where they remained faithful until death. Through the years of their marriage, they were the parents of five sons: Jerry, Larry, Gary, Barry and Carey. He was proud of his boys and taught them to love the Lord and His Word. Bill also thanked the Lord for his daughter-in-laws: Lynne, Sandy, Dina and Janet, as well as their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bill's legacy will live on through the values he taught his sons and their children. |
