2. WILLIAM WASHINGTON 'WASH' BARLOW4, son of Andrew Jackson Barlow and Elizabeth Till Burkett, was born March 17, 1879 in Simpson Co Mississippi, and died October 09, 1920 in San Augustine Co Texas, burial in Spring Hill Cemetery, Sabine Co Texas, but later moved to Bethel Chapel Cemetery in Pineland, Sabine Co Texas, where his wife would be buried many years later.    DC #33078, San Augustine Co Texas

He married LIZZIE ELMIRA MORRIS on May 20, 1905 in Hemphill, Sabine Co Texas. The daughter of Benjamin Franklin Morris and Sarah Virginia Howard, she was born November 22, 1883 in Sabine Co Texas, and died April 27, 1962 in Jasper, Jasper Co Texas, burial in Bethel Chapel Cemetery, Sabine Co Texas.
These are the grandparents of Lora Beth Barlow Wright.    She writes:
This couple lived in Sabine and San Augustine counties in Texas.
The year after they married his parents moved from Sabine Parish Louisiana to VanZandt Co Texas.  Wash Barlow was a farmer, logger, and worked at sawmills.
He died at the age of 41 leaving a widow and 8 children ages 1-14. His death certificate says he died from Landry Paralysis. I am told he had a growth on his spine which couldn't be operated on. He was paralyzed for some time before his death. The attending physician was Dr. John A. Morris, a cousin of Lizzie.
He was first buried at Spring Hill Cemetery in Sabine Co Texas but was later moved to Bethel Chapel Cemetery near Pineland, Sabine Co Texas, where his wife was buried many years later.
In 1911 he bought 90 acres of land 9 1/2 miles south of San Augustine in the Grapevine Community. This was sold in 1918. Then bought 69 1/2 acres in the Goat Hill Community (north of Rosevine), in San Augustine Co, 7 miles southeast of San Augustine.

Few men have spent a more extended and useful life as a ctizen of the parish than W. Scott Brown. He was born in 1848 and spent his entire life in Sabine Parish. His parents were pioneers of Ward Two, where some of the earliest settlers of this section of the state located.
Mr. Brown has served his parish and ward in various official capapcities for many years, as may be seen by reference to the annals of the parish government. He was an upright and conscientious citizen and commanded the respect of all who knew him.  Mr. Brown was engaged in the mercantile business for many years and a few months ago opened a store at Hornbeck. While these memoirs were being printed Mr. Brown died at the home of his son, Mr. Edward Brown, in Ward Two.

According to my mother, Grandpa was born Sylvester Barlow
My Grandpa named himself ....
Grandpa was born on March 13, 1887 in Crystal Springs, Copiah Co Mississippi. His parents called him Sylvester.  At about 3 or 4 years of age, while standing on the banks of what I now know to have been the Pearl River, a gentleman asked him what his name was.
Grandpa pointed to a ship on the river, and asked, "What's the name of that ship coming yonder?"
The man replied, "Why son, that's the Oliver Clifton."
Grandpa then responded to the gentlemans question with, "Well, that's my name, I'm Oliver Clifton Barlow."  And apparently, his parents let him keep the name.

We lived with Grandpa when I was a baby, and he and my mother were very close. He told her that story .... but other family members had only heard that he named himself, not how he came by the name.
I, determined to find the ship, the Oliver Clifton, finally received the following information:
The 'Oliver Clifton'
Robert Nicholas Fox was Master. It sailed to New Orleans and Georgetown. The round trip between Georgetown and New Orleans took about 10 days. I think it was named after an editor of the Daily Leader in Brookhaven, Mississippi.

Mr. Barlow and a son were riding in a pick-up when the vehicle overturned. The younger man suffered only minor injuries.
Funeral services were held at Seagoville Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock and burial was made in a cemetery in that vicinity. Clifton Barlow taught school at Prairieville and in other rural schools in this sector for a number of years. He retired from the teaching profession about four years ago.* (see note)
An uncle to Mrs. Sid Macon, she and her husband were among those to attend the funeral.

*Note:  My father was the younger Barlow driving Grandpa's pickup truck, loaded with furniture bound for Texas through the Ouachita Mountains in Mena, Polk Co Arkansas ... Grandpa was planning to return home to Arkansas. My mother, myself and my baby brother, Grandpa and Daddy were in the cab of the truck. It overturned, my brother and I were thrown from the truck ... Grandpa ran to save us ... minor injuries only, Daddy's ear had to be sewn back on, and ... after finding transportation .... we resumed our move to Texas and Grandpa returned home. A few days later, we got the news that Grandpa had died from a broken neck sustained from the accident. I am told that my father never recovered from the guilt that he felt, having been the driver of the vehicle.

I have death certificates of both in my files

From information I have gathered from my Uncle Clifton, they returned to the states in 1925, and first made their home in New Mexico where they had purchased a farm, but later traded the farm to his brother, RT, for land in Seagoville, Kaufman Co Texas. Grandma did not continue teaching, instead became a homemaker, and Grandpa, left the teaching profession c1937, (his obituary listed him incorrectly as having retired from teaching) when he went to work for the federal government, first at McNeil / Stellacom Island in Washington state where he transported persons to and from the island, and when a new prison was built in Seagoville, he transferred there as a corrections officer, retiring c1953. From what I have been told, Grandma did not move to Washington state with him, but I have questions about that, because in my research of her family, I find her grandmother and aunts living in Washington during that time period.
After Grandpa's retirement, they bought 30 acres of land in Houston, Perry Co Arkansas on the Fourche Lafave River and built a home, but Grandma's death came shortly thereafter, caused by breast cancer and complications of diabetes. In 1957, Grandpa died as a result of a car accident. The home was sold, and almost all of the contents lost, including a collection of books, and a chest full of photographs.
Grandma and Grandpa were both in their 30's when they married, and after having one child, Clifton, they had given up on having another child, and had made arrangements to adopt another child, when after 8 years, Grandma became pregnant with my father, Bobby. The child whom they had 'almost' adopted, was in turn adopted by Grandpa's brother, Victor Barlow, and that child, Bobby Barlow, is living in Texas, though I do not have much information on his family. I have made contact with his children, but apparently there had been some dispute / hard feelings among the family and they are not interested in making my acquaintance at this time.   Bobby, if you read this, I would love to meet you and your family!

THE MABANK BANNER August 29, 1918
FROM BERT BARLOW, U.S.N.T. Station, San Diego, California

This is Saturday afternoon and we are off, so I shall take advantage of the opportunity and tell a few of the many things to be learned in the navy.
I arrived here on the morning of the 10th, and soon broke into detention camp, as is the case with all recruits. I am still in detention, but a fellow learns some things here.
We had a fine trip of about 80 hours, and, using a former expression, "if the world is as large the other way as it is this, it is a whopper." There is always plenty of life and merriment in a trainload of recruits, and we had an exceptional crowd.
I have gone through with the usual medical series: vaccination and the "shots" for typhoid, malaria and yellow fever, and am now doing some drilling. We get the minor forms of drilling in detention, and lots of physical exercise, more commonly known as "Swedish."
The food here is far superior to what I expected. They feed us as if we were honored guests all the time. The food is usually of large variety and well prepared, plenty of it and served in a very nice manner. I think I'm increasing in weight rapidly.
The location of this station is just grand. Situated on the bay with a good elevation, it gives us a good atmosphere and a small variation in temperature. The people of San Diego use the shortest thermometer in the world.
Our barracks are the buildings used by the Panama Pacific Exposition and are quite a sight within themselves. The part is arranged as it was during the exposition and there are some very beautiful scenes about the place.  There are some very quaint buildings here, representing the foreign countries that took part in the great fair. I may write more after I get out and look them over more carefully to make sure of my descriptions.
There are four or five thousand in this camp now, but the number will be raised to probably eight or nine thousand. An army camp is also located here.
Yesterday afternoon, my brother Clifton came to my tent for a short stay, and to bring me a letter from home. I can hardly express my happiness.  Clifton has been stationed at Mare Island, but was transferred here. It is my wish that we may stay together while in training anyway.
Respectfully yours, Bert Barlow
FINAL RITES HELD FOR BERT BARLOW SATURDAY AT 3 P.M.

Funeral services for Bert Barlow were held Saturday, March 19. Interment was in Elm Grove cemetery. Mr. Barlow passed away Thursday evening, March 17.
Bert Barlow was born July 19, 1896 in Sabine Parish, La., son of A. J. and Elizabeth Barlow.
He was a member of the Canton Methodist church, to which he was devoted to serve in many ways. His interest in the music of the church was exemplified in his leadership of congregational singing often and well; he was a member of the choir, and was deeply concerned that more young men should learn the fundamentals of hymn singing and its direction. He enjoyed life to the fullest, and appreciated qualities of spirituality in his fellowman.
He displayed concern for community and national service and welfare. Having served his country in military service, he was an active member of the American Legion. He was a Mason, and past master of the Anchor Masonic Lodge at Marshall, Okla., he likewise held membership in the Eastern Star Chapter.
Friends far and wide remember him in his 33 years of federal service as a rural mail carrier, a vocation in which he was active even to the last day of his earthly life.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Estell Barlow of Canton; three daughters, Mrs. N.E. Lewis of Bowie, Mrs. A. E. Young of Abilene and Mrs. R.S. Sheffield of Lubbock; one sister, Mrs. J.J. Meyers of Wilcox, Ariz.; four brothers, O.C. Barlow of Houston, Ark., L.V.Barlow and Jack Barlow of Dallas, and R.T. Barlow of Weatherford; six grandchildren.

RITES HELD FOR BERT BARLOW

Funeral services for Bert Barlow, 58, were held at Canton Saturday afternoon, March 19, and interment was made in the Elm Grove Cemetery with ceremonies by the Masonic Lodge of Marshall, Oklahoma. He died suddenly while en route to a hospital at Terrell late Thursday.
Mr. Barlow had been a mail carrier on one of the Canton routes for the past three years. He had also been previously engaged in the same service at Stamford, Texas, and Marshall, Oklahoma. He was well known in this vicinity having been reared at Elm Grove, to which community he moved when but a small boy.

I have a copy of Bert's death certificate in my files
Children of Bert and Myrtle are:
I could not locate Bert in a 1920 census.  I find a Lee, age 24, born in Texas, living in Reeves Co Texas, but his wife is Rita, I believe, it is almost illegible.   I believe they would have been living around Henderson Co Texas in 1920.
