  Dear Ms. Farthing:

     RE:  Old Pleasant Valley Cemetery

We are pleased to inform you that the above referenced cemetery was awarded a Certificate of Historical Signifi-
cance by the Board of Trustees of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History at its meeting on January
  19,  2001.

We have notified the Copiah County Board of Supervisors of this action, and it is our hope that they will exercise
the authority granted them under House Bill #780 and thereby in their discretion repair, rehabilitate and main-
tain the Old Pleasant Valley Cemetery as a historical monument.  We would encourage you and your friends and
family members to contact the supervisors to ask that they maintain the cemetery.

We appreciate your  bringing this matter to our attention and  providing us with such good documentation.   Any
time this Department can be of service to you, please do not hesitate to call on us.

With all best wishes, I am
            Sincerely,
            Elbert R. Hilliard
            Secretary, Board of Trustees

  UPDATE:  June 11, 2001

It appears that we need to contact  the  Board of  Supervisors in  Copiah Co as suggested by Mr.  Hilliard of  the
Mississippi State Archives.   Gerry Bufkin Richmond just today  returned  from the cemetery, where she says the
weeds are again waist high ...and she had problems wading in mud to the cemetery.  However, with the help of her
granddaughter, holding the weeds away from the tombstones,  she has made photographs, and  will forward copies
to me for downloading when time allows.

  To voice your concerns, contact:
