This genealogy is a compilation of the work of many persons, including myself, who have researched the families included herein. In some cases, names of the researcher is contained along with the family, but in most families, it is not. A list of all persons who contributed to this genealogy is available for your convenience. As always, much of this work is not documented, and is not written in stone. Please advise me of any changes that need to be made, as well as additions, and supporting documentation where available.

The William Hilton family in this genealogy, originated in South Carolina, migrated to Mississippi, via Alabama, after which many of the families continued to Louisiana, and Texas. Today, these families can be found in most of the 50 United States.

WILLIAM HILTON2, born between 1780 - 1790 in South Carolina,  and died April 23, 1843 in Monroe Co Alabama.

William Hilton and two of his brothers left Sumpter Co moving to Mississippi when William got sick in Monroe Co Alabama where he died.

While I do not recall where this information came from, another researcher, Mike Little, disputes this claim, his views on this are as follows: I don't think that the Hilton brothers were traveling together if you can believe the place of birth on the 1850 census records. If they were traveling when he died in Alabama in 1843 then how do you explain that a lot of his nephews and nieces were born in Mississippi prior to 1843?   I noticed #15, William A. Hilton3, born c1831 in Mississippi -- that would have been born in Mississippi 12 years before. I can understand a few "errors" but there are several that suggest that they migrated at different times.  Unless there were other brothers.

One researcher shows his birth date as September 19, 1770 and death date as April 23, 1843, and that his mothers name was Ann. This information was apparently concluded from a tombstone inscription found in the SC Magazine of Ancestry, Vol 1, page 194, where is shows several inscriptions from Rehoboth Cemetery in Clarendon Co SC. One stone has written, Sacred to the Memory of William Hilton, Departed this life, 23 April 1843, aged 72 yrs, 7 mo and 4 days. I cannot deny or confirm this information, but it would conflict with other sources that tell us William died in Alabama .... unless his body was shipped back to SC for burial.

According to Dr. Jackie Hilton, they also had a son, James A. Hilton, born c1829, who was married to Elizabeth Lucinda Mullican. He writes: James A. Hilton is undoubtedly the son of either William or Thomas Hilton, most probably William and Josey, though the census of 1850 shows him to be born in Mississippi. It is possible he was born after his fathers death in Alabama, or that the census is in error. 1850 census of Simpson Co Mississippi, household #439-439 has James A. Hilton, age 21, Lucinda Hilton, age 20, George H. Hilton, age 7/12, all born in Mississippi

Dr. Jackie Hilton also shows that Humphrey Hilton is the son of William Issac Hilton. From information I have gathered, I think he is more likely a grandson. In 1850, Simpson Co Mississippi, household #331, an Amey Hilton is living next to William Isaac Hilton. She is aged 52, and has a child, Humphrey C. Hilton, age 10 living with her. I believe that this is the wife of William, and that William is deceased, probably in 1843 as stated. The child may or may not be hers, but I feel more like he would be a grandchild.

ELIZABETH CHARLOTTE HILTON, born 23 February 1822 in South Carolina, and died 20 October 1899 in Cisco, Eastland Co Texas, burial in Oakwood Cemetery, Cisco, Eastland Co Texas

THOMAS NORVELL HILTON, born June 10, 1825 in South Carolina, and died August 18, 1868.

HUMPHREY CARROLL HILTON, born June 1839 in Mississippi - I believe he is more likely a grandson, but cannot figure out who's child he might be, so will put what I can find in census in these pages.  

JAMES COLUMBUS HILTON2 (Mr.1) was born c1801 in South Carolina, and probably died before July 1860 in Mississippi.     One researcher shows him in Middlesex England in 1861

He married ELIZABETH TAYLOR.   She died after 1870.   There seems to be some confusion between this family and that of #6 John James Hilton, son of William and Amey.   I do not know where the name 'Columbus' or 'Taylor' comes from in this genealogy, it is in an old file I have on my computer.

In 1870, Elizabeth, age 70 is living in the home of  John and Matilda Jane Guynes Barlow. I do not know of a relationship, they live next door to Louisa Bridges Hilton, widow of Thomas Norvell Hilton.

ALEXANDER NATHANIEL HILTON, born March 14, 1842 in Mississippi, and died 28 March 1932, burial in Prewitt's Chapel Cemetery, Hornbeck, Vernon Parish Louisiana

By 1860, Phebe has remarried to Dempsey Touchstone, the son of Green Touchstone and Sally Stanley, and widower of Sally Millsaps. Sally had died in 1854. They, along with her 2 sons, Carson, age 16, and Robert, age 14, are living in the home with CC Barlow and Mary J. Mahaffey Barlow, Mary being Phebe's niece.

JAMES ALICE HILTON, born c1828 in Mississippi, and died November 04, 1864 in Fort Magruder, Galveston Co Texas, Company E, 20th Texas Infantry of typhoid fever

WILLIAM OLIVER HILTON3, born 04 November 1830 in Mississippi, and died 01 June 1898 in Polk Co Texas

GEORGE W.  HILTON, born c1841 in Mississippi. George, age 17 is living with in Polk Co Texas with his sister Mary Loper in the 1860 census, but was no longer found in 1870.  A George W. Hilton died who fought in the Civil War with the Simpson County Regiment, and was killed in battle. Possibly George had returned to Simpson County before the war started

AMOS CARSON HILTON, born December 12, 1843 in Mississippi, and died June 24, 1917 in Mississippi

WILLIAM ISAAC HILTON3, (William2, Mr.1), son of William and Ann / Mary / Josie 'Amey' Hilton, was born April 18, 1818 in South Carolina, and died February 23, 1904 in Harrisville, Simpson Co Mississippi.

He married SARAH AMANDA PEARSON in 1844 in Selma, Dallas Co Alabama.   Sarah was born June 24, 1828 in Alabama, and died January 26, 1917.  William and Sarah are buried at Harrisville Cemetery, Harrisville, Simpson Co Mississippi.

Living next door is Amey Hilton, age 52, born in SC, with child Humphrey C. Hilton, age 10. Is she Wm's mother, and who is the child, Humphrey.

He is two doors from Elizabeth Hilton, age 50, with child, Alexander Hilton, age 17. She is the widow of James Hilton.

I am unsure of who Charles and Henry are. Also, they live two doors from an Annie Hilton, age 67, with child, Elizabeth Hilton, age 10, is she Wm's mother? If Amey, in 1850 is his mother, at age 52, I don't think Annie will be his mother at at 67, 20 years later. And who's child is Elizabeth? Wm and Sarah's children, Amanda, Sarah, Brady, and Isaac Wm, are not in this census, have they died? Samuel is not in the census either, but may have left home.

In 1910, Manda S., a widow, is living with William Patrick, she borned 11 children, 6 living.  The living would be John, Wm. Patrick, Solomon, Thomas, Minerva, and Alonzo

William Hilton was a cobbler by trade and spent time in military service during the Civil War

WILLIAM PATRICK HILTON, born April 17, 1849, and died December 16, 1917 in Harrisville, Simpson Co Mississippi, burial in Harrisville Cemetery in an unmarked grave.

SOLOMON A. HILTON, born April 29, 1851 in Harrisville, Simpson Co Mississippi, and died December 19, 1912 in Desoto Parish Louisiana.

SAMUEL J. HILTON, born 1853 in Harrisville, Simpson Co Mississippi.   One researcher shows the name to be Daniel Jerome.  I disagree based on the 1860 census which plainly states Samuel J.   He married NANCY.     Her maiden name is unknown. -I do not recall where this information comes from-
What became of Samuel J. 1870? I find a Samuel in Crystal Springs, Copiah Co Mississippi, his age though, is 21, wife, Laurinda, age 27, children: Grace T., age 7, William, age 3, and Benj. P, age 8 mo. The child, Grace, cannot be his child, unless he fathered a child at age 14! I am unsure that this is the same Samuel. I have been unable to locate him in 1880 either.

THOMAS WESLEY HILTON, born September 17, 1855 in Harrisville, Simpson Co Mississippi, and died December 02, 1937 in Harrisville, Simpson Co Mississippi.  

MINERVA ALICE HILTON, born August 17, 1858 in Harrisville, Simpson Co Mississippi, and died December 1946 in Harrisville, Simpson Co Mississippi.
She married GEORGE WASHINGTON 'SNAP-EYE' BARLOW.    Click her name for this family

ISAAC WILLIAM HILTON, born after 1868 in Harrisville Simpson Co Mississippi, and apparently died before 1870

JOHN JAMES HILTON, Sr.3 (William2, Mr.1) son of William and Ann / Mary / Josie 'Amey' Hilton, was born November 22, 1819 in South Carolina, and died December 30, 1893 in Mahaska Iowa.

He married 1) MARY D. TAYLOR about 1840.   I do not recall the source for Mary's maiden name.   She probably died between 1870-1876.
He married 2) MINTERIA I. on 21 May 1876 in Simpson Co Mississippi., who had previously been married to James L. Waldrop.    I do not know her maiden name.

WILLIAM J. HILTON, born c1844 in Mississippi, not found after the 1860 census, perhaps he was a casualty of the Civil War.

AMY ELIZABETH HILTON, born 15 December 1844 in Simpson Co Mississippi, and died 08 January 1932 in Sabine Parish Louisiana.
She married JOHN BILLY MAHAFFEY on 27 December 1866.  The son of John T. Mahaffey and Mary Lowe, he was born 28 November 1841 in Simpson Co Mississippi, and died March 1933, Sabine Parish Louisiana.  Both are buried in Ebenezer Cemetery, Florien, Sabine Parish Louisiana. JEFFERSON WILLIAM 'WILL' HILTON, born April 1864 in Mississippi.  I can't help but think that the son, William J. may have the same name, reversed, and that perhaps Wm. died in the Civil War and they named another child for him.

ELIZABETH CHARLOTTE HILTON3, (William2, Mr.1) daughter of William and Ann / Mary / Josie 'Amey' Hilton, was born 23 February 1822 in South Carolina, and died 20 October 1899 in Cisco, Eastland Co Texas, burial in Oakwood Cemetery, Cisco, Eastland Co Texas

She married 1) CHARLES HODGE[S] / HOGG, date unknown, he died in 1840, Simpson Co Mississippi.

A small paper in the handwriting of Jacob Lamb, attached to a portion of the pension application filed by Elisabeth Lamb, tells that "Jacob Lamb married November 12, 1841 to Elizabeth Charlotey Hogg." She married 2) JACOB LAMB on November 12, 1841.     He was born 25 March 1791 in Georgia, and died 25 November 1868 in Texas.   Jacob had previously been married and had one son, Joseph Lamb, born c1839, who was raised by he and Elizabeth. Jacob's first wife died about 12-14 months before his marriage to Elizabeth, according to her pension application.

Sons I.B., P.T.B., and I.J., live in the next 3 houses

Richard  Foster received the pension application of Elizabeth Hilton Lamb, which states that she is the daughter of William Hilton, born in South Carolina, and that her  birthdate is February 23, 1822. This birthdate could conflict with that of Emiline, unless Mrs. Hilton conceived immediately after Elizabeth's birth, and gave birth to Emiline in her 8th month of pregnancy.

JESSE ALFRED LAMB, born 01 May 1843 in Hazelhurst, Copiah Co Mississippi, and died 05 March 1898 in New Boston, Bowie Co Texas

EMELINE [SARAH] HILTON3, (William2, Mr.1) daughter of William and Ann / Mary / Josie 'Amey' Hilton, was born October 12, 1822 in South Carolina, and died June 05, 1850.

She married JOHN MADISON TAYLOR. He was born January 15, 1810, and died April 18, 1872 in Harrisville, Simpson Co Mississippi, burial in the Bethlehem Cemetery in Simpson Co Mississippi.  

HENRY B. TAYLOR, born 1838 in Simpson Co Mississippi [1900 census shows August 1832], and died October 12, 1904

THOMAS NORVELL HILTON3, (William2, Mr.1) son of William and Ann / Mary / Josie 'Amey' Hilton, was born June 10, 1825 in South Carolina, and died August 18, 1868, burial is in Harrisville Cemetery, Harrisville, Simpson Co Mississippi

He married 1) SARAH ANN GARRAWAY.    Bill Waller shows her death date as 1852.

He married 2) LOUISA ELIZABETH BRIDGES. The daughter of Mr. Bridges (deceased by 1850), and Elizabeth / Eliza Bridges, she was born July 26, 1835 and died July 22, 1934 in Simpson Co Mississippi, and is buried in the New Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Simpson Co Mississippi.

In 1900, she is listed as Louisa Nelson, age 64, living with her daughter, Carrie Barlow. So did she remarry to a Nelson?

In 1910, she is living with Hardy/Horace and Pauline Hilton Ball Her age is 74. She is shown with name 'Ball' and as mother of Pauline. She says she has borned 8 children, 4 of them living. Frances and Carrie are deceased, Wiley is living, but what about Robert and Almedia?    This also would prove her to be the mother of Frances, William and Rosa.

GEORGE BROWN HILTON4, born March 04, 1848 in Mississippi, and died September 01, 1928 in Mississippi.

FRANCES MELVINIA HILTON, born October 19, 1854, and died February 15, 1900.
She married LOUIS BRYANT BARLOW.  The son of Narvel Barlow and Elizabeth Byrd, he was born c1849, and died in 1912, Simpson Co Mississippi.  For more on this family, click his name.

WILLIAM MONROE HILTON, born August 18, 1856 in Mississippi, and died October 01, 1926, burial in Jones Co Mississippi.

ROBERT ROZIER HILTON, born June 09, 1866.  I am not sure where the birthdate comes from.  I find a Robert in the 1900 Simpson Co census, born October 1867 and married to NANNIE for 3 years, no children born, but could not locate them again in 1910.

LARKIN MERRITT HILTON3 (William2, Mr.1) son of William and Ann / Mary / Josie 'Amey' Hilton, was born c1828, and may have died prior to 1880 in Mississippi

He married MARTHA VIENNA LEE.    In the 1900 census of Copiah Co with son, Joshua, her name is shown as Annie, age 62, born March 1838, borned 13 children, 9 living.  Perhaps they were calling her 'Ennie'. I was only able to locate 3 of those children in 1880 and 1900.   The surviving girls would have married names, but the males are all disappeared.

REBECCA J. HILTON, born c1846-47 in Mississippi. Not found after 1850, however, Robert J. is the age she would have been.

HUMPHREY CARROLL HILTON3, (William2, Mr.1) son of William and Ann / Mary / Josie 'Amey' Hilton, was born June 1839 in Mississippi, and died between 1910-1920, probably in Simpson Co Mississippi.   He is in the 1850 census with Amy Hilton, widow of William Hilton, his age 10, but I believe he is more likely a grandson than a son. I am putting what I can find of his lineage in this genealogy, and if anyone can prove who his parents are, please let me know.

He married 1) SARAH A.   She was born 14 February 1840, and died 26 September 1883, burial in County Line Cemetery, Copiah Co Mississippi.      He married MARY E. c1903.
(I find a record of H.C. Hilton marrying Mrs. T.A.L. Sebrons on 30 Dec 1885 Simpson, could this be Humphrey?)

In 1900, H. Carroll Hilton, age 60, born June 1839 lives with his daughter, Almeda and her husband, Wm. D. Touchstone in Simpson Co Mississippi

In 1920, Mary Hilton, a widow, is still 46 years old (his wive's do not age), she is now living with her nephew Joe Walker in Mt Creek, Rankin Co Mississippi

Note that Drury's mother was a Taylor, and several Taylor's intermarried with the Hilton families, so these are most likely kinfolk living with them, they most likely came to Louisiana together.

He married 1) SUSAN.   She apparently died before 1880.       He married 2) ELIZABETH M. before 1880.  She had apparently died or they divorced before 1900.     He married 3) NANCY J. c1904.

FANNIE L. HILTON, born May 1875 in Missippi.
She married and divorced Mr. MCKAY, and had one daughter, BETTIE, born May 1897.  I do not know what became of them after 1900.

WILLIAM W. HILTON, born c1877 in Mississippi.  I would think that James first son William was deceased or surely they would not have named a second child William.  I did not locate him in a 1900 census

THOMAS GREEN HILTON3, (James2,Mr.1) son of James Columbus Barlow and Elizabeth Taylor, was born July 10, 1840 in Simpson Co Mississippi, and died August 17, 1874 in Rapides Parish Louisiana, burial in Old Oliver Merchant homeplace, west of Hineston, Louisiana

He married 1) SERENA A.P. HALL in Caldwell Parish Louisiana on March 15, 1866.
He married 2) NANCY GOLEMAN in April 09, 1869 in Rapides Parish Louisiana.  The daughter of Balis E. Goleman, she was born March 17, 1851, and died 11 March 1933 both in Louisiana, burial in Mt. McCardell's Co., Elmore's Reg't Texas Infantry (this company became Co. E, 20th Regiment Texas Infantry) - enlisted 02 May 186_ at Hempstead by J.H. McCardell for 3 years or the war and traveled 100 miles to rendezvous.  Second muster roll dated July & August 1862: present, pay due from enlistment, enlisted 02 May 186_ at Polk Co.; Third roll dated November & December 1862: present last paid by Capt. S. Martin to October 31; Fourth dated January & February 1863: present and paid by Capt. S. Martin to 01 January 1863; Fifth roll dated March & April 1863: present - detailed as teamster by special order No. 65 22 March 1863 and last paid by Capt. Martin through 28 February 1863; Sixth roll dated January & February 1864: present and last paid by Capt. S. Martin through 31 August 186_; A tri-monthly return dated 10 January 1864 shows absent on detached service to main battery west of city November 1863; return dated August 1864 shows absent - detached service in QM Dept. (Houston) 12 August 1864; last return dated November 1864 shows: date of 04 November 1864 at Fort Magruder - loss; died at Fort Magruder, Typhoid fever. Burial: since he died of Typhoid, they probably burned the body, presumably on Galveston Island.

WILLIAM OLIVER HILTON3, (Thomas2,Mr.1) son of Thomas Hilton and Phebe Mahaffey, was born 04 November 1830 in Mississippi, and died 01 June 1898 in Polk Co Texas, burial in Peg Top Cemetery, Polk Co Texas

He married NANCY ANN LOPER.   The daughter of William Loper, Sr. and his wife Elizabeth, Nancy was born 20 December 1833 in Alabama, and died 02 February 1906 in Polk Co Texas, burial in Peg Top Cemetery, Polk Co Texas.  She is a sister to William Loper Jr., who married William's sister, Mary Hilton   

I find and Oliver Hilton in the 1870 Polk Co Texas census, but do not believe him to be the same.  This Oliver is 47 years of age, born in Alabama, and his wife and children do not match up with the 1860 and 1880 census records.

ZACHARIAH MILLARD HILTON, born 02 June 1856 in Mississippi, and died 11 March 1939 in Polk Co Texas

AMOS CARSON HILTON3, (Thomas2,Mr.1) was born December 12, 1843 in Mississippi, and died June 24, 1917 in Mississippi, burial in Harrisville Cemetery, Harrisville, Simpson Co Mississippi.

He married LYDIA TOUCHSTONE on December 20, 1866. The daughter of Green Powell Touchstone, and Serena Hall, she was born March 1849, and died May 27, 1946 and is buried beside Amos in the Harrisville Cemetery.    (Photos from Find-a-grave)

ROBERT ANDREW HILTON4, was born 08 October 1868 and died 24 June 1916.
He married NANNIE E. BUTLER on 14 February 1898, daughter of Wiley J. Butler. She was born 25 April 1871 and died 06 August 1952. Robert was a physician according to Robert Grantham

SIRENE R. HILTON, born 20 March 1871, and died 16 September 1876, burial in Harrisville Cemetery

EULA P. HILTON, born c1882. Death date unknown, but she is buried on the right side of her father in Harrisville Cemetery, Harrisville, Simpson Co Mississippi
