Jeremiah and Martha moved to Texas shortly after their marriage.

In the late 1860's Jeremiah "Jerry" and his family moved to Vernon Parish, Louisiana, to a sparsely settled area near Pitkin, Louisiana.  It was later called Smithville probably because Jeremiah boosted its population by fathering twenty two (22) children.
Jeremiah was postmaster of the Post Office in Smithville.  Today all that remains of the old settlement is the Old Smith Cemetery. This can be seen by special appointment only, because it lies inside the firing range of the Fort Polk Military Base.
