This article written by Mrs. Miriam Dodds Hennington:

It is to the memory of one of the eight children born to the union of Benjamin and Celia Bufkin, we are indepted (sic) for the land on which our church now stands. This is a son, David, and his wife Susan Bufkin.

Note:  The church began in 1824 -- (Also, at least one record shows the church to have started in 1813, as shown on the sign at Antioch Baptist Church), however, it was not until the year 1874 that any legal transaction of the land, where the church building stands, was made. At this time a deed was made and filed for record in deed Book BB page 1874 in the Chancery Clerk's office of Copiah County reading thus:
This deed is made on the 30th day of May 1874 between David Bufkin and Susan P. Bufkin, parties of the first part and B.B. Day, Benjamin F. Bufkin and Young Robertson, trustee of Antioch Baptist Church and their successors thereof, parties of the second part to wit:

2 acres lying N&S in NW corner S1/2 E1/2 NW1/4 and 2 acres lying N&S in NW corner S1/2 W1/2 NE1/4 all in Section 35 T-10-6E, containing 4 acres to have and to hold the premise herein conveyed for sole and separate use and benefit of the said Antioch Baptist Church and the members thereof for the purpose of erecting thereon a house of worship, cemetery, and any all other necessary improvements beneficial or useful for said church.                  Click thumbnail to see original>

David served in House of Representatives during Reconstruction days in 1873-1874-1875.   On July 30, 1874, David and Susan Bufkin deeded 4 acres to Antioch Baptist Church.

Their first son, Everette was a three pound baby, washed and presented to his mother in a coffee pot which cost 5 cents.

David Bufkin, William Wade, Mr. DeCell and an elder Millsaps boy were the only four to vote against secession from the United States, and by voting against secession they did their part nobly during the war. The story goes that they left Jackson at night to go home on the back roads to avoid trouble. Though he voted against secession, David served in the war along with his brother, Urben, who lost his life.
Their daughter, Lizzie was Susie Noland Bishop's mother.   David's brother, Solomon, was a home-missionary for 16 years in southwest Mississippi.   He became a member of Antioch Baptist Church in 1854.

Haskell Bufkin Waller says of James:
James was a jolly fellow with dark brown eyes and hair and a moustache. He must not have been overly ambitious as he fell off the house (they were re-roofing it with hand riven cypress boards) and he never did much after, that but make a little garden, read some and smoke his pipe filled with foul-smelling plug tobacco. They always lived with Hettie.
Granny Bufkin -Sarah- was a slender dainty nervous type lady who if she was sitting in the rocking chair was always drumming her fingers on the chair arms or swinging her feet back and forth.

From the Book, 'Antioch Baptist Church, 175 Years, 1824-1999', This article written by Catherine Bishop Coronado

William Carey was a farmer, though keeping up with news and politics by taking the Memphis paper. He rode his horse, Old Tak, 3 miles once a week to get the mail. Once using a pecan limb as a walking stick, he stuck it by the first step into his daughter Daisy's house where he stopped to rest. It took root and later grew until replanted near the garden gate. This big pecan tree still stands on Keven Thompson's place, his great-great grandson.
Annie Eliza was a creative homemaker, making her home attractive to all. When winter was over she cleaned her fireplace by scrubbing brick over brick (as was the custom) then making a wooden frame to be covered with cloth to fit over the opening. The cloth was left over from the tomato cold frame cover. She laid large ferns on it in an attractive pattern and sprinkled wet ashes over them. When dried and excess ashes brushed off, the pattern where the ferns had been was a pretty white.
They lived past their 50th wedding anniversary on June 19, 1923, their children gave Carey a gold watch.
W.C. Bufkin Succumbs at Jackson Hospital
Mr. W. Carey Bufkin died, early Thursday morning at a hospital in Jackson, where he was carried the day before for an operation, which was never performed. Mr. Bufkin was sick a very brief time, and the news of his serious illness and death came as a great shock to friends throughtout the county. It was realized, however, when he left here that his condition was desperate.
Carey Bufkin was born and lived all his life in the Antioch neighborhood. In fact, at the time of his death, he was living on his father's old place, where he was born. He is survived by his widown and six living children-- Jenks, Tommy and Boony Bufkin and Mrs. Ollie Pickering, Mrs. Dave Bishop, and Mrs. Hattie Barlow. He is also survived by three living brothers -- J.L. and Ben Bufkin, of near Hazlehurst, and Dud Bufkin, who lives in Illinois.
Carey Bufkin was an upright Christian gentleman. He will be greatly missed in old Antioch church, of which he had been a member since early life, and where he had long served as a deacon. The funeral services were conducted Friday by his long time pastor and friend, Rev. J. H. Purser, who served in the war with his father, David Bufkin.
David Bufkin, William Wade, and one of the older Millsaps boys, it will be recalled, were the only three in Copiah County to vote against secession, they did their part nobly during the war. The war-time friendship between David Bufkin and Mr. Purser was a strong tie between Carey Bufkin and his pastor, but the tie grew stronger with the passing years. He was a member on whom his pastor could rely. He was always at the services of his church, unless providentially hindered. John S. Decell, another life-time friend, also made a talk at the funeral services, declaring from long and intimate knowledge of his dearted friend he could say out of a full heart, "He was a good man." Peace to his ashes, may the sod lie lightly on his grave.

Death of Mr. Brown Bufkin
The subject of this sketch died in Martin, Mississippi, August 10th 1909 and was laid to rest in the Old Antioch Cemetery August 11th, with a host of friends and relatives to look, for the last time on earth at his pale face. He was about twenty seven years of age, and was staying in the Delta, at the time he was taken sick with typhoid fever.
He was brought to Martin, where his wife and little child were residing with her father. After a long siege of eighty-seven days with the fever, he passed away. He was a good, christian boy, and was the clerk of the Baptist Church of which he was a member. He joined the Methodist church at Barlow, Mississippi, when he was quite young but afterwards joined the Baptist church.
He married Miss Bessie Noland, and they have one little daughter, Laura Delesse. Besides his loving wife, and little daughter, he leaves a mother, father, five brothers, and five sisters to mourn the loss of a devoted husband, a tender father, and loving son, and brother.
He told them before he died that he was going to heaven. This is such a consoling thought to the bereaved loved ones.
God gave. He took, He will restore.   He doeth all things well.
May the Lord help the bereaved ones to bear their sorrow.
A precious one is gone     A voice we loved is stilled    A place is vacant in his home    That never can be filled.
Loving Cousin, Hattie

HIGHLY DECORATED PILOT ADDED TO HIGHWAY 472 HEROES
Information furnished by Archie Ashley this past week indicates that one of the most highly decorated pilots in World War II was also a native of the Highway 472 area which several people are proposing be named Heroes Road.
Ashley said the name of Captain Charles E. Cliburn, who was born and grew up in the area was one more notable person connected to the area.
Ashley said Cliburn piloted the "Blue Streak" a B-24 in Class 26 which is recorded as having flown 110 missions. Cliburn's plane, hit many times always made it back for a safe landing, and, had 19 engines replaced while in service.
"I had just arrived at Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, MS in late 1943 when his (Cliburn's) plane was brought in and put on display riddled with holes, but an example of what a plane could stand and still operate." Keesler was the retirement site for the famous Blue Streak where it became a student trainer, after having flown 110 missions, and 300,000 miles over Germany, Italy, Romania, Greece, Australia, Africa and Sicily. Her combat crew sank a Nazi freighter off Crete, blew up a tanker at Canada and sent a destroyer to the bottom of Sudan Bay. They shot down 23 German and Italian fighters, dropped half a million pounds of high explosives, won the distinguished unit badge and individual decorations for gallantry in action. Yet, with all her battles in enemy skies not a man in all of her crew was wounded. As part of the oldest bombardment group overseas the history and achievements of the distinguished aircraft were inscribed on her fuselage. The Blue Streak was the first USAF bomber to bomb the European Continent; over Plaesti (high altitude); to hit the Italian fleet; over Naples; on a Rome raid; over Plaesti (low level); over Weiner-Neustadt; of a heavy bombardment type to be based on the European Continent. Under the wing was inscribed "This old Veteran returned from one combat raid with both wings, a rudder, and an engine so badly shot up as a result of enemy action that they had to be replaced. There have been 19 engines installed in this plane because of enemy action." Ashley said he was sure there were others who were not included on the list increasing the appropriateness of naming that stretch of road as Heroes Road.

Charles was the son of Charles Inge Cliburn and Addie Bufkin Cliburn. His grandmother was Sarah Frances Barlow 1856-1933 -- He retired as a Lt. Col. and now lives at 1904 E. 14th Place, Ada, Oklahoma 74820. The road referred to was formerly called Rockport Road and then Highway 472.

From the book Antioch Baptist Church - 175 years - 1824-1999, This article written by Catherine Bishop Coronado

They were married young, David 21, and Daisy, 17, on December 23, 1898 and reports were there was dancing on the porch until it fell in. They moved only twice, from a house on Grandpa's place to the 160 acres that was deeded from Grandpa. In 1900, their first child was born and 9 more followed til 1918.
Little David died of polio on September 5, 1919. He left a grieving family. After the funeral, when home, Mama caught Shelby throwing his shoes up in the air and she asked him why. He said, 'because you didn't bury them with him.'
Papa and Hobson were registered for the draft for WWI on September 12, 1918. Delia remembers that was a sad day for Mama, her last child was to be born September 21, 1918. They never had to go as the war ended on November 11, 1918.
The money crops he grew on his farm were tomatoes, carrots and cotton. The farm prospered from the sale of cattle and timber. During this time he was secretary to the organization, Woodmen of the World, which was a family insurance business. When all the children were grown, he dropped it. He was a substitute mail carrier for Archie Evans, mail carrier in1919. Before the tomato craze came, Papa would allow one son the profit from the crop he had helped with. With 3 boys in college on football scholarships, money was hard to come by. Jimmy (H.J.) at Mississippi College, Gerald at Delta State and Shelby later on at Delta State. Then they started packing tomatoes, joined by cousins Otis and Miller. After the season was over in Hazlehurst, they put their money in their shoes and hitch-hiked home.
Mama liked flowers and always had lots of them, red poppies along the garden fence, and every color everywhere else.
Many relatives brought their loved ones back to Antioch for burial, and sometimes Mama's flowers were the only ones there. I remember one time she told me to go out and get all the white I could find as they were for a baby. Then a colored person died in the neighborhood who didn't have much, Mama would go and take a white sheet so they could be laid out on it. Some criticized but she said that all death had dignity. Mama always made Bill a blackberry pie for his birthday on June 4th which was early for them to be ripe, but she always found enoughn for one pie. Also, he had his favorite blue crock bowl for buttermilk and bread for supper.
Papa was on the Board of Directors for the Federal Land Bank of New Orleans, which met once a month for 38 years, above the bank of Hazlehurst. He was also assistant Tax Assessor for 20 years. He never ran for office, believing a Christian could not be a politician. He was clerk of Antioch, taking from his father, A.G.Bishop from 1919-1932.
