John Jackson Berry and Alise Miles

Notice: I have several persons who contributed to this work, I have tried to verify it all thru census records, but those prior to 1840, as well as
maiden names of spouses, I cannot verify. If you should have any other verification or documents that prove this lineage in any way, please let me
know. Searching census records, I believe I have identified all of the children of John and Alise, and have them all accounted for between 1830
to 1880

Note: In some cases, when the male head of family is not listed in the census, we 'assume' he is deceased, or when he has a spouse with a
different name, we assume the previous one is deceased, but we must always remember the possiblity of divorce, which I am finding more and

John Jackson "Jack" Berry3 (John2, John1) son of John Berry and Edith Polk, was born April or May 19, 1803 in South Carolina, and died August 17, 1859

He married Alise "Alcy" Miles between 1825 -1827, probably in Alabama.

The daughter of William 'Hardy' Miles and Mary Powell, she was born October 15, 1807 in Tennessee, and died June 13, 1883

Both are buried in Strong River Cemetery, Pinola, Simpson Co Mississippi

THE SIMPSON COUNTY BERRY PATCH states that he died in August, 1860, of heart disease.
Twenty-three days later Alise Miles Berry passed away at the age of seventy-five.

The information for Alise, is incorrect, as she is enumerated in the 1860-1880 census, and her death date has been
given to me as 1883 and 1884.

Also from the Berry Patch, I find the following information, but have not verified, are the following notes:

John Jackson "Jack" Berry became well known and respected in the county as he served in the Mississippi Legis-
lature for Simpson County in 1840 ~ 1844 ~ 1846 ~ 1857 ~ 1858. The new laws of Mississippi were just published
and was their guiding tools for the next few years.

Some excerpts----

"....that all that portion of Copiah County west of Pearl River shall form and constitute the county of Copiah; and all
that portion of said county east of Pearl River shall form one county to be known by the name of Simpson, in memory
of the late honorable Josiah Simpson..."

"...the county town in the county of Simpson, shall be known by the name of Westville, in memory of the late Col. Cato
West... Approved January 23, 1824"

"...Acts for colored persons not to sell spirituous liquors, not to be employed in printing offices, nor to keep houses
of entertainment, not to act as ministers of the gospel; not to vend goods out of the limits to town..."

Alise was a granddaughter of William Miles, who died in Missouri, and the daughter of Hardy Miles, a famous Revolu-
tionary soldier who was born in 1760, and died at the age of 74 in Rankin Co Mississippi. This was testified to by
32 men, including Colonel John Berry and his brother-in-law's William Gardner, and Simon Polk. (Husbands of Mary
and Centilla Berry)

Colonel John and Alise Berry lived near old Stonewall, where Mt. Zion Baptist Church is located near Westville.

As told by Mary Elizabeth Thurman Webb, gr-granddaughter of William H. (Bill) Berry was visiting relatives in Rankin County when he took ill and died. It was decided that he would be buried there due to the lack of refrigeration during that time.

While I cannot verify that William is indeed a child of Jack and Alise, or of his spouse' maiden names, I will attempt to
verify his family.

Family Circle: Martha Bishop is the daughter of John Bishop and Lucretia Taylor, and sister to Harriet E. Bishop who married William's brother, Denson Berry. The 1870 census shows a Bennett Berry, age 1. There is not a Bennett Berry shown in the Bible records, so I feel he may be the same as Benjamin, but his age should have been 4-5 years old. If he is not the same, then the question of where Benjamin was during that census is left to face. I think most likely, this is Benjamin.

at any moment.

He was Justice of the Peace at Westville 1868 -1876 and Postmaster at Westville

I recieved the following letter on May 7, 2013 from Anthony Quinn:

Talley Berry who was married to Mary Quinn had a son by a black woman who worked in some capacity for Berry. He (William "Jack" Camper) was born in Sept 1880 in Westville, Simpson County, Mississippi and died in Detroit, Michigan on May 25, 1940. Jack married Hattie Bishop in 1898 in Simpson County, Ms. and they had one child named Lovie (1899-1942). Hattie died in 1980 in Toledo, Ohio. Lovie died in Toledo. Lovie married Robert Quinn and the couple had 10 children.

He married 2) Margaret "Mag" Bishop, c1857, daughter of John Bishop and Betsy Dear.
She was born September 28, 1848 and died December 05, 1919.

He joined the Confederate Army, but was captured at Port Hudson, Louisiana and was a POW
on Ship Island at the close of the war.

Robert was a school teacher and a coach,   and a deacon at the First Baptist Church in Brook-
haven,   Mississippi, and Jennie Lucile Berry Shows   taught school and was active in the
Women's Missionary Union.    Each of the Shows brothers have chosen   ministry vocations
and have served churches in MS, LA, TX, Nevada, Missouri, Arkansas and Tennessee. All three
are known as the First Baptist church recreation family, according to the 1985 Church Recrea-
tion magazine, and are leaders in senior adult ministries. They each served at different times in
the MS Hurds-Madison Baptist Association.   Bobby served   for four years at Woodland Hills
Baptist church, Scotty served for four years at Alta Woods Baptist church, and Glenn served for
five years at First Baptist Church in Clinton.

Need 1900 census

In July, 1914, Jack and Augusta were returning from a visit with Mag Berry, who was staying
   with her daughter Cora.    As they were coming down a hill, the carriage went out of control.
   Everyone escaped from the carriage except for Augusta.   The carriage struck a large oak tree,
and Augusta was badly hurt.   They took her to Tom Moore's house, where she died.
   She is buried at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.   Jack remarried a woman named Mary Reno.

near Strong River Baptist Church. He served as pastor of Pinola Baptist Church and Strong
River Baptist church for seven years. His pastorate led him to build four new churches, and he
eventually became pastor of seven other churches in Mississippi.

College in Phoenix, Arizona, which he held for forty years.

I have been unable to determine who TME and James are.   Originally I had thought TME to be Tally, but he is shown enumerated with his
wife in a separate record, and though this would fit more correctly his age, the other is without doubt, him.    I wonder if this might not be

Dates from cemetery records conflict with both ages shown in census records.
