According to Mose Corris Herndon, (RWWC) the following children of Waver and Leacy are buried in Pine Forest / City Cemetery, Homerville, Clinch Co Georgia: ... My belief is that perhaps all of these children are buried in a Smith Plot at that cemetery, and he is assuming them to be the children of Leacy and Waver. According to census records, in 1910, Leacy had borned 11 children, 8 living, which would mean only 3 children would be buried at that time: |

Harriet "Hattie" Barlow Chauncey By Lois Chauncey Thornton
Harriet Barlow Chauncey was born Oct. 12, 1889. She had a yearning for knowledge. In 1910 she went to A. & M. School in Douglas, Georgia. She returned to Clinch County where she taught for several years. When she applied for a job teaching in Fargo, the principal warned her that the tough boys of the town had run off every teacher they had ever had. Harriet assured the principal that they would not be able to run her off, and she was right. Nobody was tougher than Harriet!
In the 1920's Harriet, her husband John Chauncey, and their three children, Reva, Lois, and Rita, moved to Jacksonville, Florida where their fourth child, Raymond was born.
Later they moved to Kingsland along with her brother Needham Barlow and his family.
Harriet (called "Hattie") loved church. She became a Sunday School teacher and taught for many years until she became disabled in 1975. John was ordained a deacon in Kingsland, and he also taught Sunday School for many years. They helped to organize Dunn Memorial Baptist Church in Baxley, and their son Raymond became the first pastor.
Hattie was an astute Bible scholar. She loved to go through the alphabet saying a scripture beginning with each letter. She continued this until the time her memory became bad.
Hattie thought that her "Pa", William Barlow, was the most perfect person in all the world. She often quoted him and could sit for hours talking about him. The only time that she lost a little faith in his perfection was when her mother, Mary Arnold Barlow, had a horrible cancer on her foot. Pa called Dr. Culpepper, probably the only doctor available. The doctor had Bert, Claude, and Waver to hold her mother while he cut out the cancer. Harriet said that she would always hear her mother screaming as the doctor operated on her without anaesthetic, and she did not quite approve of what "Pa" did in calling Dr. Culpepper.
Hattie was a strict disciplinarian. She expected only perfection and somehow her children never made her perfection list. |

She married NOLAN LITTLETON CAPPS November 22, 1914 in Homerville, Clinch Co Georgia. (MB) The son of Littleton T. Capps and Ella Barber, he was born 1891 in Clinch Co Georgia, and died February 1959 in Milledgeville, Baldwin Co Georgia. (A) |
Mary Barlow writes: Elizabeth Barlow, or "Lizzie" as she was called by her family, was born in Clinch County, Georgia on March 23, 1895, the daughter of William Barlow and Mary Arnold Barlow. As part of the large family of a Baptist preacher, she had a strict upbringing with no foolishness allowed, especially at mealtime, when the children were supposed to eat quietly with no conversation.
She received her education in a one-room schoolhouse attended by children of all ages including her six brothers and sisters.
Lizzie married Nolan Capps, also from Clinch County, in 1914; and they had three children, Wycliff, Erma, and Eloise.
Since farming was practically the only occupation in Clinch County, Nolan and Lizzie moved to Augusta, where Nolan went to work for the railroad. Desiring to put a little money aside for her children's education, she enrolled in beauty school. After completing the course, she went to work as a hair stylist and later owned her own beauty shop until the 1950's.
Lizzie was a smart lady and proved herself to be a good businesswoman. She and her husband bought several tracts of farmland near their home in Augusta. When a new mall was developed in the area, Lizzie was able to sell her property for many times what she had paid for it.
In her later years, Lizzie developed crippling arthritis and had to use a walker to get about, but her mind remained strong and active. |

37. THOMAS 'TOM' WATSON BARLOW, son of William Barlow and Mary Arnold, was born July 15, 1897, and died July 21, 1973 in Evans Co Georgia, DC #29987
He married MARY JERNIGAN on February 27, 1926 in Homerville, Clinch Co Georgia |
Mary Barlow writes: Tom Watson as a young man went to work for his brother Waver in the turpentine business. His job was to drive the pick-up truck and transport a group of men from the town to the turpentine still in the woods. The relationship between the two brothers was strained after a disagreement over Tom's work, and Tom sided with Needham and Hattie against Waver and the other sisters in the fight over their father's will.
Tom later married Mary Jernigan and went to work for the highway department. He and Mary adopted two young boys whose parents, the Monroes, were killed when a huge oak tree fell on their house during a tornado. Tom died in 1973. |

She married SAMUEL ARTHUR SMITH on February 23, 1921 Homerville, Clinch Co Georgia |
Lurena Barlow Smith by Chloe Cox and Julia Faye Palmer
Lurena Barlow Smith was one smart woman. She loved to work -- never complained about having to work, and never said she dreaded doing any kind of work, although she had much rather be outdoors than in the house. She was always blessed with good health. Mama was strong willed and had to have her way. She loved a good argument better than anybody and did not approve of teasing and joking.
Mama was a good neighbor. She and Daddy visited the neighbors and went to see the sick. She loved company if they would come on Sunday so they did not interfere with her work, and it was very seldom anybody left empty-handed. She always had something to give you. There was always something growing in her garden - spring, summer, fall, and even in the winter there would be greens growing. Her Irish potatoes were always planted by the 14th of February. If it was too wet to make rows in the garden with the tractor, she got out in the back yard and made rows with the hoe. She always had to have a big garden, for she had to grow enough for all us children. One time Daddy outsmarted her. She kept on at him to fix more rows, so he finally did fix the rows; but he laughingly told us that he didn't fertilize the soil - so it would not produce so much to be tended to!
Mama loved to fish. That was one thing she would stop working for if she got a chance to go fishing.
When Mama was in the house relaxing, she was doing something with her hands. She crocheted, tatted, embroidered, and made quilts.
Mama loved her grandchildren. After they all grew up and were out on their own, they did not go to see her as often as they should. She would get on the telephone and invite them all to dinner. They always said if their phone started ringing on Sunday morning before day light, they knew it was Grandma.
After Daddy died, Mama said it was so lonesome on Sunday afternoon after everyone went home. One weekend when Julia Faye had come to visit, she decided to wait until Monday morning to go home. But bright and early Monday morning Mama woke her up and started getting her things out to the car. Julia Faye hardly got to brush her teeth because Mama was rushing her out so Mama could get started to work. So, thereafter, Julia Faye went home on Sunday afternoon.
Mama always said she prayed she would die with her shoes on. She did exactly that and was in her beloved garden. |

He married 1) RACHEL ARNOLD. They either divorced or she died before 1923.
He married 2) BRUNELL GEORGIA BASHLOR October 06, 1923 Homerville, Clinch Co Georgia. The daughter of Colquit Bashlor and Bessie Cox, she was born June 05, 1906, and died November 18, 1989 in Kingsland, Camden Co Georgia, DC #901457 (also found her in the death index of Duval Co Florida at Ancestry) I did not locate them in a 1930 census. |
Needham was a nice looking young man and popular with the ladies. As the youngest son he had been spoiled by his parents and older brothers and sisters.
He courted several young women in the area including a relative of brother Waver's wife, Lois. When he and pretty Brunell Bashlor from DuPont eloped, both families were displeased. Brunell's brother Maxwell remembers his sister calling to tell the family that she was married. He and his older brother, Russell, ran as fast as they could to tell their father, who was working nearby. Mr. Bashlor was very unhappy when he heard the news, but it was too late to do anything about it.
Mr. A.C. Smith says that he was at Waver's house when Needham and his bride drove up in a brand new Model T Ford. Needham turned around fast in the dirt yard and kicked up a cloud of dust, showing off his bride and his car to the onlookers who included an old girlfriend, Marietta James, a sister of Lois Barlow.
After sister Hattie and her husband, John Chauncey, moved to Jacksonville, Needham and Brunell soon followed.
Needham worked as a street car conductor and later helped to build the bridge across the St. Marys River on Highway 17.
They moved to a little house in the country near Kingsland, Georgia in the late l920's and began to raise a family of seven children.
Needham drove a school bus, did a little farming, and became a barber. His barber shop in Kingsland was known as a center for political discussing and cussing for many years.
Needham, like his father, was very determined in his opinions and would not hesitate to fight anyone who had the audacity to express a different viewpoint. When long hair became stylish with the younger generation, Needham refused to cut hair any other way than very short. Many a time his young grandsons, who were brought there reluctantly for a free hair cut, left the barber shop in tears because "Popi" Barlow had cut off all their hair.
During the 1950s Needham was elected to the office of justice of the peace. Since Georgia did not require a three day waiting period for a marriage license as most states did, many young couples came from neighboring states to be married in Kingsland by the justice of the peace, making the position quite profitable. Needham was kept busy with the marriage business for a few years until he lost the election.
Needham mellowed a little in his later years and gave his grandchildren the affection that he seemed unable to show towards his own children. He always slipped the grandchildren a dollar or two when they came to visit, which may have helped to ease the pain of the dreaded haircuts. They will always have fond memories of playing with their cousins at the old place in the country while "Popi" fried fish on the ancient stove in the picnic shed. |

Two Kingsland Girls Drown in St. Marys River Wed.
Members of Small Party Swimming at Clarks Bluff, Bodies Recovered Last Night |
|
---------------------------------------------
Two Kingsland High School girls, Pauline Strickland, 17, and Colleen Barlow, 16, were drowned yesterday afternoon about 4:30 p.m. while in wading at Clark's Bluff on the St. Marys river several miles west of Kingsland.
Neither of the girls could swim, it was stated. They were in the water with two other girls directly in front of the home of Mrs. Leon W. Mills, who was also in the river with the girls, and was a good swimmer. When the two girls slipped off into the deep channel, Mrs. Mills made a heroic attempt to save them, and failed after she was almost drowned herself. Those first reaching the scene of tragedy worked with her, while hundreds of citizens gathered for the rescue of the bodies.
The body of the Strickland girl was the first to be found two hours later. Then five hours later, the body of the Barlow girl was brought to the surface. The Oxley Funeral Home of Fernandina, assisted the volunteers in the rescue.
Miss Strickland was the daughter of Mr. And Mrs. J.J. Strickland and Miss Barlow was the daughter of Mr. And Mrs. N.A. Barlow. Both were members of the Baptist Church of Kingsland, and members of the ninth grade in the local high school.
Besides her parents, Miss Barlow is survived by four brothers, N.A. Jr., Winston, James, and Edward Barlow, and two sisters, Cleo and Helen Barlow, all of Kingsland, also her grandmother, Mrs. C. Bashlor of DuPont.
Miss Strickland is survived by her parents; one brother, J.J. Strickland, Jr. of Jacksonville; six sisters, Mrs. Fred Howze of Jacksonville; Mrs. D.E. Fiveash; Miss Mildred Strickland, Brunswick; Mrs. Andrew Cottle, Woodbine; Mrs. Brodie Claxton, Yulee, Fla.; and Miss Geneva Strickland, Kingsland.
Joint funeral services will be held at the Kingsland Baptist Church Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with the Rev. E.H. Campbell, pastor, assisted by Rev. R.W. Waterman, pastor of the Folkston Baptist Church, officiating.
The Kingsland High School boys will act as active pallbearers, and honorary escort will be the Kingsland High School girls.
The body of Miss Strickland will be at the family residence until 1:30 o'clock, and the funeral cortege will leave for the church, with burial following in Homeward Cemetery, near Waverly.
The body of Miss Barlow will be at the residence until 1:40 o'clock, and the funeral cortege will leave for the church, with burial following in Brazell Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are in charge of the Oxley Mortuary, of Fernandina.

Cleo Barlow 1929-1982 -- by Dorinda Barlow
Vivian Cleo Barlow, the third child of Needham and Brunell Barlow, was born in Kingsland, Georgia on April 18, 1929. She grew up in the small town of Kingsland and attended the local school system. After graduating from high school she attended the University of Georgia. Cleo graduated with the Class of 1950 with a major in Spanish and was a member of the Spanish club. Education was very important to Cleo. She always encouraged her family to attend college. She was especially instrumental in her brother Jimmy attending the University of Georgia with encouragement and a little cash along the way.
After graduating from UGA, she went to work for Delta Airlines in Sales at Miami, Florida. Though she had suffered most of her life with rheumatoid arthritis, she was an outstanding employee for Delta Airlines and received recognition for her loyalty and service to both Delta and its customers.
Cleo loved the finer things in life, such as music, fine art, good books, travel, and high fashion. Music helped her to relax and brought her much pleasure. She played the piano most of her life and later tried her talent with the guitar. She traveled abroad and in the United States as much as her health would allow. Cleo spoke fluent Spanish and had a great interest in the Mexican and Hispanic culture. Her taste for fashion was always up to date. Her choice of bright and jewel toned colors was a definite display of her bold and independent personality.
Cleo loved for her friends and family to visit. She would treat her younger sister Helen to the adventure of travel by having her flown to Miami on Delta Airlines.

continued..... Helen said she most remembers dining at Howard Johnson Restaurant and Cleo taking the time to do her nails and hair. At the time, Helen had the habit of biting her fingernails. Cleo promised her she would buy her a red dress if she would stop biting her nails. Well, Helen let her nails grow out and Cleo bought her the red dress.
Cleo enjoyed sharing some of the funny but embarrassing times with her friends and family. Two of her most often told stories were: When she came home one weekend from UGA, she and her friends went for a Sunday afternoon ride. Upon leaving, she was instructed not to use all the car's gas. Therefore, she and her friends went to the gas station and Cleo asked the attendant for "A" gallon of gas. He misunderstood and gave them "8" gallons. She could only pay for one gallon, so all her friends pooled their money to pay for the 8 gallons.
Cleo was living in Miami and was working with Delta Airlines and feeling quite sophisticated with her lifestyle. Her older bother N.A. came to visit. Cleo, her roommates and N.A. were sitting around chatting about growing up, college etc., when N.A. jokingly mentioned he could remember when Cleo ran in the chicken yard barefoot! She often laughed and said this brought her down a notch or two. Cleo was an animal lover and always had a dog, cat or both. She cared for all her pets but she especially loved her poodle Pero. Her younger brother Ed said when he would go and visit Cleo, her dog Pero always knew when it was time for Cleo to come home. About five minutes before her arrival, Pero would go to the window to sit and wait for her.
In the early 70's, due to Cleo's health, work became increasingly difficult and she retired from Delta Airlines. In spite of the disabling arthritis she suffered with she always had a smile and was fun to be around. She many times expressed her gratitude to all the friends and family who were there for her.
Cleo died unexpectedly October 1, 1982 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Delta Airlines, who first flew her to Miami, provided the final transportation back home where she now rests at Longwood Cemetery in Kingsland, Georgia. |

40. EUNICE INEZ BARLOW, daughter of William Barlow and Mary Arnold, was born August 14, 1904 in Homerville, Clinch Co Georgia, and died November 13, 1965 in Homerville, Clinch Co Georgia.
She married JESSE LEONARD BOOTH, SR. on January 17, 1925. He was born November 28, 1904, and died April 19, 1973, burial in Homerville City Cemetery. |
Inez was the youngest child of William Barlow and Mary Arnold Barlow. She married Leonard Booth in 1925, and they had four children, Mary Emma, Leonard, Jr., Robert, and Waver Derry.
When she was a girl, the church was very strict on dancing and drinking. Inez was turned out of the church for dancing because of the testimony of Molly Smith who was backed up in her statement by Inez's sister, Lurena. Inez was given a chance to be reinstated if she would confess and apologize. Inez contritely apologized for dancing, but said that she was even more sorry that she had also been drinking - along with her sister Lurena.
Inez died at the age of 61 from a heart attack. |
