Oswald Barlow, son of James Barlow and Ann Crompton

Pioneers and Prominent Men of Utah, Genealogies and Biographies

OSWALD BARLOW, son of James Barlow (born August 27, 1805) and Ann Crompton, both of Manchester, England.
Oswald was was born July 22, 1829, at Manchester and came to Utah 1852, driving a merchant team overland.
He died April 23, 1876 in Utah, burial in St. George Cemetery, St. George, Utah. (Utah Cemetery Records)

Additional information about Oswald Barlow provided by Susan Horne:

Oswald Barlow was born to Ann Crompton before she was married to James Barlow. She listed his father as having the surname of Fogg. She was not married at the time of his birth. All of Ann's subsequent children were after her marriage to James Barlow who adopted Oswald.   Oswald's daughter Lunes, married her father's half brother, John.   Note from Susan BARLOW Holmes:  This would mean, that any of Oswald's ancestors and descendants are not true Barlow's as far as DNA testing is concerned. However, in that his daughter, Lunes Barlow married to John Barlow, half-brother to Oswald, they would once again be true Barlow's.  Thus parts of this family will test as Barlow's, other would not.

Our Pioneer Heritage, Volume 20, Bands and Orchestras, Washington and Weber Counties

Not the least among the musical aggregations of that early day was the martial band. Its first leader was Captain Oswald Barlow. He had for drummers: Wilford and William A. Terryl, Joseph S. Worthen, Erastus and Joseph McIntire and Joseph O. Earl.   As fifers: E. T. Riding, Elishe Cragun, George F. Jarvis, Alex Fullerton, Thomas Bleak and Horatio Pickett.
On all holiday occasions this band serenaded the town and aroused the patriotic sentiments of the populace. The band still survives and still plays the airs made famous by Captain Barlow. —Ella J. Seegmiller.
