JOSEPH1 BARLOW died abt. 1704 in Chester Co Pennsylvania

Elaine Jeter sends the following, January 2006:  I recently purchased a reprint of "The Lancaster Family; A History of  Thomas and Phebe Lancaster of Bucks County, Pennsylvania and Their descendants from 1711 to 1902".  Published by Harry Fred Lancaster, Columbia City, Indiana, 1902. (reprinted privately, 2005).

I have always thought the Joseph Barlow immigrants of PA were most likely from Yorkshire or Cheshire in England, chiefly because those were the places that many of the Quakers lived, and they had plenty of Barlows also. However, I have just turned up an interesting statement recorded by Rachel (Lancaster) Benson 1790-1886 (yes she managed to get to be 96 years old), who was the daughter of Jesse Lancaster 1751-1833 (he was the oldest son of Rachel Barlow 1728-1796 and Benjamin Lancaster 1731-1791). Citation is from p.280 of the Lancaster book cited above.

"Benjamin Lancaster, my grandfather, married Rachel Barlow, whose parents came from Wales, and had five children: Jesse (my father), Joseph, Ann, Benjamin and Nathan. They removed to Maryland about the close of the Revolutionary War, I judge, and before any of the children were married.

"I cannot tell whether he bought the land, or it was granted to him, however he owned several hundred acres thereabout, made the first improvement at the White House <in Hartford County MD> and lived there long after. Then, after my mother died, <they> (i.e., Benjamin Lancaster and Rachel Barlow Lancaster) came and kept house and ended their days here."

Elaine's comments:

Perhaps Joseph Barlow with his son Joseph (and maybe even a wife ???) came from Wales rather than from Cheshire or Yorkshire (where we have always suspected he originated). The above is difficult to decipher because there are too darned many Rachels in the family, but here's what I think it means:

Benjamin must have known that his parents (Thomas and Phebe <Wardell> Lancaster) had come from England, so one presumes that Rachel (Lancaster) Benson could have actually known from her own grandmother that the Barlows came from Wales rather than from England. In any case she obviously believed that was their origin. Rachel (Barlow) Lancaster died in 1796, Benjamin Lancaster died in 1791. Rachel (Lancaster) Benson was the daughter of Mary Parsons, Wife #2 of Jesse Lancaster 1751-1833. Mary (Parsons) Lancaster probably died in 1790 [the same year that Rachel (Lancaster) Benson was born]; Jesse (her father) did not remarry until around 1795 or 1796 <he married Elizabeth Dyer at that time> which would be about the time that Jesse's mother (Rachel Barlow Lancaster) died. So this all makes sense if dissected. That being said, Rachel (Lancaster) Benson was about 5 or 6 years old when Rachel (Lancaster) Barlow died, so she would probably remember her grandmother who lived with tthe family, but it seems doubtful she would have conversed with her about where her parents had come from ??? On the other hand, her father Jesse certainly must have known...

At this point I think it is entirely possible that the Barlows immigrated from Wales rather than from Yorkshire or Cheshire. I guess we can't go wrong with "British Isles". ? At least I think we need to give some weight to the Welsh possibility.

JOSEPH2 BARLOW (JOSEPH1) was born c1690 possibly in Chester Co Pennsylvania or British Isles, and died c1738 in Limerick Twp, Philadelphia Co Pennsylvania

He married ANN EVANS after 1720 probably in Limerick Township, Philadelphia Co Pennsylvania, daughter of JOHN EVANS and JEAN TEATE.   She was born c1692, and died 1744 Limerick Twp, Philadelphia Co Pennsylvania.

JOSEPH BARLOW:    Probate records located in Chester County refer to the death of a Joseph Barlow in 1704, with the inheritance going to his son, Joseph Barlow.  In any case, it does appear that the family was a Quaker family.   EJ 8/31/99

ANN EVANS:    Widow of Mathew Brooke, 1680-1720

Edson Barlow note:   Matthew Brooke died June 18, 1720, at Limerick, Montgomery Co Pennsylvania.  After the death of Mathew Brooke, she married Joseph Barlow, and the title of the acreage belonging to Mathew Brooke was titled to Joseph Barlow. She was still living on November 12, 1743, when she sold the property to her son, Matthew Brooke.

ABIGAIL3 BARLOW married ORTLIP, name cited as Attlip in will of George Brooke d 1761

It is  probable that one of her sons was named Israel Ortlip (b.abt 1757). Israel Ortlip had a daughter named Susan Ortlip (b.abt 1770) who married John Coryell, and one of her Coryell daughters b.1812 was given the name Abigail Barlow Coryell. It is difficult to believe that this name selection could have been by chance.   EJ 2004

We know that Ann's husband was named "Uptergrave" (however spelled), and we assumed (based on the will of her half-brother, George Brooke, d. 1761) that he was likely to be Abraham, since Abraham is also named in that will. However,  despite considerable work, I have been unable to find the sort of  "proof" that sticks for this marriage (wills, marriages, baptisms,  etc.), so I went looking through the "Updegrave" families to find a better candidate. You never know if you will find them as Opd..., Upd... Upt... Graff, Graef, Grave, Grove, etc. etc.

What I found is this:

Pennsylvania Wills, 1682-1834:   UPDEGRAVE, EDWARD. Perkiomen and Skippack.   March 11, 1775. November 24, 1787. 1.129

To wife Ann income of estate until son Joseph is 21. Afterward he to pay to wife yearly 7 pds. and maintenance. To son Joseph, 1 s. To son in law, Jacob Clemens, 1 s. To daughter Ann Clemens, 1 s.

Exec: Wife Ann Updegrave. Wit: John Lukens, John Edwards, Gottshalk Gottshalk.

So here is Edward "Updegrave" who is exactly the right age, with a wife named "Ann" and a son named "Joseph". Joseph is NOT a usual  family-name for the Updegrave's, but Ann Barlow's father and grandfather both bore that name. Very interesting... The will also tells us that son Joseph Updegrave was not yet 21 in the year 1787; and that daughter Ann Clemens' husband was Jacob Clemens. There are, of course, about a  zillion "Jacob Clemens" guys, but because I am also descended from the immigrant Gerhardt Clemens, I knew exactly which one: Jacob b Apr 12, 1749, d Jan.27, 1823, whose parents were Jacob b. abt 1704 d.1782 and Barbara Clemmer.

So for these reasons, I am concluding that Ann Barlow (d/o Joseph) did NOT marry Abraham Updegrave; instead her husband must have been Edward Updegrave. Edward's parents were Jacob Updegrave / Opdegrave b.1687 in Germantown, and Anneken IndeHoven / TenHeuve / DeHaven (another varying Dutch name, drat!!). Jacob Updegrave and Anneken were married in Bensalem, Bucks County, Apr 9, 1712 (Dutch Reformed Church). Their son Edward was born ca. 1720, so he is certainly the right age to be Ann Barlow's husband.

RACHEL3 BARLOW (JOSEPH2, JOSEPH1) was born March 03, 1727/28, and died 1796.

She married BENJAMIN LANCASTER October 26, 1749 in Prb. Gwynedd Monthly Meeting of Quakers, Montgomery Co, son of THOMAS LANCASTER and PHEBE WARDELL.  He was born December 31, 1731 in Wrightstown, Bucks Co Pennsylvania, and died 1791.

Rachel and her husband, Benjamin Lancaster moved to Harford Co Maryland in 1786 [Early Friends Families of Upper Bucks County]

1769; Rachel's family is part of the Gunpowder Monthly Meeting; August 31, 1769, note is made of her Daughter, Ann Lancaster, being "guilty of fornication and having a bastard child." Subsequent minutes show that her mother (i.e., Rachel) knew of the young man in the "liberty of her house", and that her father, Benjamin, had "taken to strong drink."

1770: Gunpowder Monthly Meeting: Rachel Lancaster, wife of Benjamin Lancaster, and four of her children, Jesse, Joseph, Benjamin and Nathan, were received into membership by a certificate from Deer Creek Monthly Meeting, dated 29th day of <??no month> 1770.

Members of this family are listed on several Gunpowder Upper 100 taxlists in Colonial and early Maryland state.

Benjamin Lancaster moved to Harford Co Maryland in 1768 (cf. Early Friends Families of Upper Bucks XXVI p.331)

He is most likely the Joseph Barlow who was enumerated in 1790 living in Washington Co Maryland. For census, Washington County reached all the way to the far western tip of MD - Alleghany County was created in 1789, but was not used by the census enumerators. It appears that his descendants may have moved into Fayette Co Pennsylvania around 1800 or so.   EJ 2005

ELIZABETH3 BARLOW (JOSEPH2, JOSEPH1) was born 1729, and died December 11, 1796 in Richland Twp., Bucks Co Pennsylvania

She married JOHN LANCASTER November 15, 1753 in Gwynedd Monthly Meeting, son of THOMAS LANCASTER and PHEBE WARDELL. He was born February 10, 1732/33 in Wrightstown, Bucks Co Pennsylvania, and died February 26, 1791 in Richland Twp., Bucks Co Pennsylvania

John Lancaster, son of Thomas and Phebe (Wardell) Lancaster, born near Wrightstown, Bucks County , 12 mo. 10 1732/33, removed with his parents to Richland at the age of 8 years and spent the remainder of his life there. In the partition of his father's real estate he was allotted the "Mansion House" and fifteen acres near the center of the 400-acre plantation. He later acquired, piece by piece, the allotments of his brothers and sisters, until he owned 235 acres of the homestead prior to his death on 2 mo.26, 1791. He was, like his father and mother, an accepted minister of the Society of Friends and a diligent and earnest member of Richland Monthly Meeting. He married, at Gwynedd Monthly Meeting, 11 mo. 15, 1753, Elizabeth Barlow, a sister to Rachel, the wife of his elder brother Benjamin. She was born 1729 and died 12 mo. 11, 1796

She was the grandmother of William Emley, who married Ann Edwards of Quakertown.   She was the grandmother of Hannah Stokes, who married Charles Williams of Cheltenham.

JOHN3 BARLOW I (JOSEPH2, JOSEPH1) was born after 1730 in Limerick Twp, Montgomery Co Pennsylvania, and died after 1800 in Limerick Twp, Montgomery Co Pennsylvania.

He married HANNAH SAVAGE December 17, 1760 in New Hanover, Montgomery Co Pennsylvania. She was born about 1740.

His father's name was Joseph Barlow, who was one of the early settlers of Limerick Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania in 1734, the following landholders were recorded in Limerick Township: Edward Nichols, 600 A; John Davy, 300; Enoch Davis, 300; John Kendall, 300; Owen Evans, 400; William Evans, 300; Joseph Barlow, 400; Peter Umstead, 250; Oliff (or Adolf) Pennypacker (Pennebacher) 250; Henry Reyner, 100; William Woodly, 150; Jonathan Woodly, 300; William Malsby, 200; Henry Peterson, 200; Peter Peterson, 100; Nicholas Custer, 7; Hironemus Haas, 250; Lawrence Rinker, 50; Stephen Miller, 170; Barnaby Coulson, 50; Martin Kolb, 150.

1776 assessment:
Matthew Brooke, 350 acres, 3 negroes, 4 horses and 8 cattle;
James Brooke, 160 acres, 1 negro, 2 horses, 3 cattle, and noted a loss by fire;
Rachel Brooke [widow of William Brooke, s/o Matthew Brooke], 190 acres, 1 horse, 2 cattle
George Brooke was mentioned as a tenant;
Benjamin and Thomas Brooke as single men.

Will of George Brooke [d.1761] calls John Barlow a "step-brother".   John was actually a half-brother of George - they had the same mother.

Referred to in the will of John Barlow, born 1763; his sister.   Married name was Corbin in the will of John Barlow, her brother.

This name has been improperly transcribed as "Rebecca" in some genealogy resources.   Copy of original will has been examined; name there is Rebeah. EJ

Another transcribed source, may be inaccurate or may refer to another unidentified Barlow: "Rebecca Barlow, married William Curden 19 June 1797, Swedes Church, Philadelphia".   Original document has not been examined; unsure whether this is the sister of John Barlow. EJ

JESSE4 LANCASTER (RACHEL3 BARLOW, JOSEPH2, JOSEPH1) was born May 03, 1751, and died November 26, 1833 in Little Falls, Harford Co Maryland

He married (1) CONSTANCE MALSBY about 1772 in Harford Co Maryland. She died before 1776.
He married (2) MARY PARSONS about 1776, daughter of JOHN PARSONS and REBECCA. She died about 1790.
He married (3) ELIZABETH DYER about 1795, daughter of JOSEPH DYER and JOANNA KEIGER. She was born July 29, 1763, and died September 25, 1851 in Harford Co Maryland

The children of Ann Weeks are listed dated 1778, 25th day of 7th mo. in the Gunpowder MM, p.72 of Quaker Records of Northern MD 1716-1800:  John Lancaster, Rachel, Matthew, Lydia, Benjamin

Enoch Williams, of Harford County, son of William Williams of Gwynedd Township in Philadelphia County, Philadelphia, and his wife Ellenor, deceased, m. Ann Weeks, widow of Daniel Weeks, deceased, and dau. of Benjamin and Rachel Lancaster, of Harford County, at Little Falls Meeting House on 5th day of 11th month, 1778. ... Among the witnesses were Rachel Barlow Lancaster, Benjamin Lancaster, Jesse and Joseph Lancaster.

John Lancaster is apparently the "bastard child" she bore in 1769 (from Gunpowder MM records, see note under her mother Rachel Barlow Lancaster - EJ)

Is this her? Probably not, since she moved to Baltimore around 1797. EJ

ABIGAIL4 LANCASTER (ELIZABETH3 BARLOW, JOSEPH2, JOSEPH1) was born August 26, 1754, and died June 09, 1811.

She married GEORGE WILLIAMS 1780, son of ANTHONY WILLIAMS and SARAH SHOEMAKER. He was born 1751 in Cheltenham, Montgomery or Bucks? Co Pennsylvania, and died 1819.

Israel Lancaster, son of John and Elizabeth (Barlow) Lancaster, was born in Quakertown, 5 mo. 22, 1761. He married 2 mo.22 1798, Hannah Nixon, daughter of Samuel and Susannah (Roberts) Nixon. She was born 1 mo. 27, 1777. He inherited the 235-acre plantation of his father lying partly in the present borough of Quakertown and partly in Richland Township, and purchased other lands in Richland. He lived at the old homestead in Quakertown until 1811. He sold the plantation in ten different tracts at different dates, the greater part of it during the year 1810. In the spring of 1811 he removed with his family to Horsham, taking a certificate to Horsham Monthly Meeting which he presented to the Quarterly Meeting 1 mo. 29, 1812, and 1 mo. 27, 1813. In the spring of 1813 he removed to Burlington County, New Jersey, taking a certificate to Burlington Monthly Meeting dated 3 mo. 31, 1813, but soon after removed to Buckingham, Bucks County, where he owned and operated a farm near the present Lahaska Station, until his death 7 mo. 14, 1836. cf. Quaker records show that this family was received into the Burlington MM group in 1813. Harriet, John, William, Morris, and Samuel are names of children.

In 1820, Quaker records show that they affiliated with the Abington MM in PA.

He was living in his father's home is 1800 in Limerick Township, and in 1812 is one of the men who were comissioners of the lottery which was formed for the purpose of building of a church. Cornerstone for this church was laid on April 17, 1817. This church building was torn down and replaced in 1875.

JOHN BARLOW III, born August 12, 1790, Limerick Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania; and died April 23, 1847, Limerick Township, Montgomery, Pennsylvania.

Susanna was widow of Joel Barlow, the brother of Phoebe. Joel died 1832. She is "Hollonbush" in one reference; but the correct name appears to be either Hollowbush or Hallowbush. EJ 6/98

Another name possibility: transcribed marriage records show this marriage as between Joel Barlow and "Susann Hollenbach" at New Hanover Lutheran Church, Montgomery County 26 December 1822

Thomas is probably the son of Levi Lancaster Benson, prb. by first wife, Elizabeth Sharp. EJ

RUTH5 LANCASTER (NATHAN4, RACHEL3 BARLOW, JOSEPH2 , JOSEPH1) was born May 13, 1788 in Harford Co Maryland, and died April 14, 1875 in Rousseau, Morgan Co Ohio.

She married NATHANIEL RICKETTS April 16, 1810 in Baltimore Co Maryland. He was born September 18, 1786 in Harford County MD, and died August 25, 1867 in Union Twp., Morgan Co Ohio.

Much information on her descendants is from census and /or from the LDS website. Appears to be well-documented.  EJ 2006

Lancaster, Ruth F Married: Apr. 16, 1810 in Baltimore Co., MD Rickets, Nathan M County court record, can be found at the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, UT, Film # 0013693-0013694.

Samuel's name is shown as 'Crossan' in the marriage record, but other records show him to be a Methodist Minister named Samuel Clawson - the marriage record was incorrect, probably written down by a clerk who didn't bother much with spelling, and maybe had a lisp as well.

SARAH JANE RICKETTS, born April 28, 1821, Belmont Co Ohio; died May 01, 1892, Lewis Co West Virginia.
She married WILLIAM BENNETT, JR. of 1808-aft.1880 (of Collins Settlement and Weston, Lewis Co Virginia/West Virginia.  The son of WILLIAM BENNETT and REBECCA MCCAULY, he was born 1808, and died after 1880

RALPH RICKETTS, born August 18, 1830, Harrisonville, Harrison Co Ohio; died May 17, 1909, Stockport, Morgan Co Ohio
He married JULIA ANN ANDERSON July 02, 1855, daughter of JOHN ANDERSON and HANNAH BENNETT.   She was born August 01, 1831 in Walkersville, Lewis Co West Virginia, and died March 03, 1915 in Stockport, Morgan Co Ohio 

Note:  Hannah Bennett is the sister of William Bennett, Jr., wife of Sarah Ricketts, Ralph's sister.  Other Bennett connections have been found to the Barlow and Lancaster families, please contact Elaine Jeter if interested in further information.

AARON5 LANCASTER (NATHAN4, RACHEL3 BARLOW, JOSEPH2, JOSEPH1) was born about 1789 in Harford Co Maryland, and died July 08, 1869 in Wheeling, Ohio Co West Virginia

He married HANNAH. She was born 1792 in Maryland, and died August 17, 1861 in Wheeling, Ohio Co West Virginia

JOHN LANCASTER5 WILLIAMS (ABIGAIL4 LANCASTER, ELIZABETH3 BARLOW, JOSEPH A2, JOSEPH B1) was born May 11, 1783 in Pennsylvania, and died January 25, 1862.

He married JANE FLETCHER October 03, 1808, daughter of ROBERT FLETCHER and PRISCILLA. She was born about 1785 in Pennsylvania.

Thomas Woolston was Tacy's cousin; he was the son of Stephen Woolston and Jane Lancaster. Jane Lancaster was the daughter of Thomas Lancaster Jr. (son of Thomas and Phebe Ward Lancaster).    This family was "disowned" or "released by request" from Quaker society in about 1828.

He is stated to have been an MD in the Lancaster genealogy book, but no confirmation found for that.  EJ 2005.

MORRIS LANCASTER, born December 31, 1840, Richmond Indiana; died after 1900.
He married ALFRETTA C. HADLEY December 28, 1873 in Clarksville Ohio, daughter of ALFRED HADLEY and ANNA NIXON. She was born December 13, 1849.

JOHN5 BARLOW III (JOHN4, JOHN3, JOSEPH2, JOSEPH1) was born August 12, 1790 in Limerick Twp, Montgomery, Pennsylvania, and died April 23, 1847 in Limerick Township, Montgomery Co Pennsylvania.

He married ANNA EVANS 1819, daughter of JAMES EVANS and CHARLOTTE BROOKE.   She was born 1798, and died 1871 in Limerick Township, Montgomery, Pennsylvania.

NATHAN5 BARLOW (JOHN4, JOHN3, JOSEPH2, JOSEPH1) was born January 27, 1795, and died February 28, 1870, burial in IOOF Cemetery, Pottsville Pennsylvania

Lydia later wrote a letter to her niece, Lotta (Reuther) Longstreet telling Lotta that the Springers had starved her when she lived with them. Catherine Reuther has that letter.  EJ-2004.

George Ralston Barlow died of lung cancer. He is buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa. He spent his younger years working as a carpenter with his father in the Dunkerton, Iowa, area. Then he went to a business college in Des Moines, and took a job with Younkers Department Store there. He was credit manager for Younkers for quite a number of years before his death.

Nettie Bucher was the youngest of four daughters of Henry and Rebecca Bucher. She was musically talented, -voice, piano and spent one year at Oberlin College. She died of a kidney failure (in all likelihood the terminal state, eclampsia, of toxemic pregnancy) after the birth of her third child, Nettie.

Henry Wallace Barlow was called "Wallace" by the family. He was a brilliant young man, graduating from Iowa State College with the highest grade point average ever recorded at the time. He went to work for the DuPont Corporation.  His death was due to "Bright's disease" (i.e., chronic glomerulonephritis)

John's original name was John Carl Barlow; after his uncle Carl Little. However, he was more fond of his uncle Earl Little, and chose to adopt the middle name Earl. John graduated from West Point in 1936, and served in World War II and during the Korean War. He retired with significant disabilities after 20 years, as a Colonel. He was editor of the West Point annual the year he graduated.

Betty Barlow was an actress 1941-1946 in New York prior to her marriage, appearing in several Broadway productions. Catherine Reuther believes she was with the Rockettes for a while as well.  She and Dr. Hocott moved to Texas, where he owned a clinic.

Since 1932, more than 3,000 women have danced as Rockettes. Each year, in cities across America, hundreds of young women audition to be members of the internationally renowned troupe. He married MABEL SARA LOOSE on 29 August 1935 in Atlantic City, New Jersey, daughter of JOHN LOOSE and LILLY ALTHAUS.    She was born 08 Nov 1913 in Shartlesville, Hamburg, Tilden Twp, Berks Co Pennsylvania, and died 17 May 1984 in Harmonyville Chester Co Pennsylvania, , burial in Mt Carmel Methodist Cemetery, Harmonyville Rd, St Peters Pennsylvania.

NATHAN CLYDE8 BARLOW, born 27 April 1891, Pottstown, Montgomery Co Pennsylvania, and died 10 September 1956, Binghamton, Broome Co NY

He married 1) NORA MAY HARTLINE c1911.   The daughter of William Calvin P. Hartline and Henrietta Hoffman, she was born 01 April 1891 and died 20 July 1933 in Reading, Berks Co Pennsylvania.

Widower Nathan married 2) EMELINE T. PARKER c1942-1944. She was born 06 May 1892, and died 28 June 1986.  No children born to this marriage.

The 1920 US Census shows Nathan C., age 28, carpenter/house builder and Nora M., age 28, living in Reading City with their dau. Margaret M., age 7, and son Nathan, age 4 yrs 11 mos. 

While living at 725 N. 2nd, Reading, N.C., age 26, and his brother-in-law Clarence, age 24, registered for the draft on 06/05/1917.  In the WWI registration, Clyde’s (as he preferred to be called) status was that of Conscientious Objector.  He is described as of medium height with a slender frame, blue eyes and having dark brown hair. 

Per the 1930 US Census, they were living with their two children on Pricetown Road, Reading City, Muhlenberg Twp., Berks Co., PA.  Daughter Margaret, age 17, was a topper at a hosiery mill.  Their son, now called William, age 15, did not work.

Clyde, age 51, and Clarence, age 49, registered for the draft together on April 27, 1942.  At that time, Clyde was living at Rt. #1, Temple, Muhlenberg Twp., Berks Co., PA and was employed by L N Focht & Son, 402 Baer Bldg, Court St., Reading.  He indicated that the person who would “always know his address” was William Spies.  He is described as having blue eyes, brown hair and light skin; he was actually measured and weighed and is shown to be 6’2” and 215#. 

WILLIAM NATHAN BARLOW, born 21 February 1915 in Reading, Colebrookedale Twp., 06 August 1986 in Munro Reginonal Medical Center, Ocala, Marion Co Florida, aged 71 years 5 months and 13 days of cardio pulmonary arrest.

Notes from Maureen Barlow Thompson re: Quaker vs. Lutheran/English vs. Welsh: It is difficult to determine if the Barlow family is Quaker or Lutheran in the early years. There are compelling reasons to believe the family was Quaker, such as the heavy Quaker population in the areas of Gynedd and Limerick Township and the Barlows’ business and social involvement with many prominent Quaker families of the day. Additionally, several of Joseph BARLOW’s descendants married well-known Quakers. Marrying outside the Quaker faith was not tolerated within the church and serious consequences followed in the form of “disownment.” Also, note the wording of Joseph1’s will: “Son Joseph…Friend Roland Powell, David….” Is “Friend” in this case referring to the traditional Quaker address or is it simply a reference to a comrade? Reasons to believe the family were members of the Lutheran faith are also compelling. Primarily, one finds records of the BARLOW family involved with or contained in several area Lutheran churches; e.g., New Hanover Lutheran Church, Alsace Lutheran, Grace Lutheran, and the very establishment of the Limerick Union Church. Why, then, did Nathan Clyde BARLOW register as a Conscientious Objector in World War I and why did the US Government approve this designation? CO status was not easily obtained at that time. My own father, William Nathan BARLOW, was adamant that the family was Lutheran. I lean toward believing the family was Lutheran in later years and originally came from England; other researchers believe firmly that they were members of the Religious Society of Friends from Wales. Elaine Jeter believes they are Welsh based on oral family history. The Barlows of England are both commonplace and well noted throughout history. Even if the family came directly from Wales to Pennsylvania, I still believe the family originated in England as is historically accepted. In any case, we can all agree the family was, in fact, from the British Isles.

Update: DNA test done on direct Barlow male descendant indicates this line is descended from the Barlows of Lancashire, England.

**Philadelphia County, PA was founded in 1682. The following indicates the changes over the years: 1752 – Berks is formed from the north half of Philadelphia Co. 1772 – Northumberland Co. is established, taking the north ¾ of Berks. 1784 - Montgomery Co. is formed from the north ¾ of Philadelphia Co. Finally, in 1811, Schuylkill County is drawn to include the north third of Berks County.
