JANE MCASHAN has contributed so very much to this genealogy. She is in possession of many original letters and photos of both the Barlow and Lee (Cornelia Virginia Lee Barlow) family.  She explained to me: The letters, along with an album of Barlow-Lee family pictures, were given to me by my husband's grandmother, Hallie Hall Barlow Olcott Chase - I was the only one who expressed an interest in the family history. The sad thing is that although there are more pictures that she gave me only the ones I've already sent you were identified. Hallie said that when she was younger (20's) her father gave her the album telling her that the pictures were of his family (Barlow & Lee). Unfortunately, at the time she wasn't terribly interested and didn't pay any attention to WHO they were. When she did want to know anyone who could have told her was long gone. I have managed to identify some of the Lee family as another remote cousin in that family had some of the same pictures & hers were identified.
6-1.
THOMAS LEE BARLOW, JR.2 (Thomas1), son of Thomas Barlow and Mary, was born 1803 in Edgefield Co South Carolina, and died November 28, 1865 in Lowndes Co Alabama.  [Mt Gilead Church Records]     [The middle name Lee, comes from Edward Eugene's death certificate, as well as the mothers name of Taleatha]

Thomas married 1) ELIZA CALDWELL, probably a daughter of Samuel Caldwell, on December 21, 1822 Laurens Co Georgia Marriage Book C-80, by Justice of Inf. Court, John Fullwood.    Eliza died between 1840 and 1845.   There is a grave at Rasco Graveyard, Dallas Co Alabama, for Elizabeth Barlow who died on March 05, 1840 that may be her. -unverified-

Thomas married 2) ANN T.A. ~ TALFONFA / TALOUSSA A. / TALEATHA KING, November 17, 1845, Autagua Co Alabama, Marriage Book 6 - 280 & 2-251 -unverified-  She was not located after the 1860 census and died 12 June 1869, according to records which show J.J. paying J.A. Franks for having dug her grave, and church records, though she is listed as a daughter of Thomas rather than his wife.
Received from his father's estate: Slave: Fan/Fenn, worth $275, and was owed $49.37 ½ by the estate
November 13, 1811
That a passport be prepared for the following persons to travel through the Indian Nations to the Western Country, viz., One for Messrs. Thaddeus Brown, Isham Brown, Samuel Brown, with two Negroes, and John Brown with six Negroes, all from the County of Washington in this state, and one for Messrs. Thomas Franklin and Thomas Barlow, the former with his mother, four brothers and five sisters, all from Richmond Co South Carolina, etc.
Sheriff Ira Stanley left in October 1826, a service copy of a lawsuit [Francis Ross vs. Thomas Green] at the residence of Thomas Barlow. According to James Barlow's Bible Thomas Green married Catharine Barlow, probably a daughter of John and Jane 'Anderson' Barlow.
Inf. Court Minutes 1822-33, p158:  Thomas Barlow was appointed January 1829, guardian of Charles and Charlas Barlow orphans of John Barlow, $700 bond with Richard and James Barlow as securities.
Inf. Court Minutes 1822-33, p171:  Thomas was appointed March 1829, administrator of Stephen Folsom's estate, with Samuel Caldwell and James Barlow as securities for $20,000 bond.
Sup. Court Minutes C-148 & 149:  Thomas Barlow was a court witness April 1830 to George Payne killing hogs and making his slaves work on Sunday December 13, 1829. Payne had been kicked out of his church
See also, the will of Mary Barlow, Thomas' mother, in which she leaves all her belongings to him.
Thomas Barlow Sr., Administrator of the Estate of Stephen Folsom, deceased, sold on March 16, 1831 Laurens Co land at the Duplin, Georgia Courthouse to the highest bidder, Kinchen Phillips; witnessed by James Barlow, JP.
Inf. Court Minutes 1822-33, p 262:  Laurens Co DR J-76 Thomas' involvement with the Folsom family is not understood, but the court awarded him an extra 2.5%, in addition to 5%, for his extra trouble with uncollectible notes, etc.
Mary Barlow, mother of Thomas, was probably not a Folsom - for reasons following: Genealogy of the Folsom Family, pp 189, 321, FHL 1,036,669 item 14: Stephen Folsom born October 10, 1781 in Newmarket New Hampshire, and died January 15, 1829 in Laurens Co Georgia, son of Benjamin Folsom born c1751 Newmarket, New Hampshire, and died February 21, 1790 Newburyport, Massachusetts, and Mary Baker, married Sarah, daughter of Oliver and Lydia Hale. They removed c1819 to near Duplin, Georgia, where he was a planter and merchant. His sister Mary -1780-1831- married in 1802 Durham, New Hampshire Ballard Pinkham who died in 1854.
Inf. Court Minutes 1822-33 p262:    Thomas Barlow, about to move out of Georgia, was ordered in December 1832 by the Laurens County Court to show cause why he should not be discharged from his guardianship of John Barlow's orphans; the action apparently brought by Anderson H. Barlow, a John Barlow heir.

I was unable to locate him in an 1870 census, or is this him?  Virginia believes it is:

The Alabama Baptist      20 November 1862      Mr. John Barlow   1827 - 1862           From: Samford University Library    Contributed by Betty BARLOW Prescott     [Spelling and punctuation as written.]

Many a heart has been made sad, and many of the noble sons of the South have passed from time to eternity since the commencement of the present war; but few purer or better men have died than the subject of this brief notice, Mr. John BARLOW, son of Deacon Thomas Barlow, of Lowndes county, Ala.
He was born December 3rd, 1827, and died at Charlottsville, Virginia, July 17th, 1862. In early youth he embraced religion and became a member of the Baptist Church, and ever adorned the profession he had made - prompt to all the duties of the Church; quiet and unobtrusive in his manners, he was esteemed most by those who knew him best.
In 1859 he moved to Texas, and at the call of his country he entered the army, 1st Texas Regiment, Hoods Brigade, and while performing the duties of a soldier he fell a victim to disease, away from father, brother and sisters, with no Kindred to cheer in his last moments. But those whom he best loved on earth, though they lament his loss, are cheered by the confident belief that the Redeemer was near, to sustain him in his last moments and conduct him safely through the dark vally and shadow of death.
May a kind Providence watch over the entire family thus bereaved that ultimately it may be a family saved in Heaven, no wanderer lost.

Town Bluff Apr 28 ‘67

Dear Brother

Yours of the 10th of March was received a few days ago. I was glad to hear from you.

I have now affected a compromise with old man Jimmyy Phillips. You will please go and ___Mssr's? Marlin _____ of Montgomery and pay over to them $3000 and their fee and take the notes – for me. I will pay you their fee as soon as it is collected the balance I have arranged here. I am anxious to get that claim out of my way. As you say there is not enough to pay me and old Jimmy both this do at once without delay. Old Jimmy has given instructions to his Lawyers Martin & Trayns of Montgomery to turn over the notes to you so soon as you pay the $3000 and their fee. Dock a friend of mine has written the above for me, I hope you will do at once as you have been instructed above. This seems to be my only chance to get anything out of the Estate. You can now pay me the balance on those notes & none of the heirs can object. You know my object.

Dock, I have one other request to ask of you and that is to put your mark of presentment on that account of mine and send it to me at once, mark it Dec 1866. I believe that was when you was hear.

Dock, I hope you understand what my object is, I know you can do in this case as directed if you will do it & I hope you will, & I further hope that you will make your arrangements your to come out hear this fall, & I will have a good home for us both, Dock now is your time, you will never get a better chance to come to this country,. If you will do all you can for me I will give you all the help I can. The first thing for you to do is to pay the $3000 that will ---- every thing & give me and you a chance to work. You have always expressed a desire to pay me my money and know is your time. If you cant pay directly, you can indirectly and no one can object ot it, you are not bound to let any one know your business, we can use the notes as a showing for the money. And as for my account, I intend trying to use that in another way (you understand me) Read this letter time & again read it until you understand it & then act accordingly.

Dock a word to the wise is surficcent there is no use in writing any plainer, you understand me you can act and keep your acts to yourself.

I will now close.

My family is well, I have this entire place planted this year, prospect good, I have no news, times easy & a plenty to eat at the present. Do pray write soon, I shall wait with impatience

Yours etc

This census also located, ten families distant from M.S. Barlow, the family of Charles Barlow, born c1822 Georgia and the family of S.D. [Samuel David] Caldwell, cousin to Merrett Barlow, located four families distant from M.S. Barlow.
Tyler Co Deed Record H-169:
Merrett Barlow may have been in Tyler Co Texas, by the time his father, Thomas Barlow, purchased on November 08, 1860 land there, a wide property that stretched from the Neches River on the east, to Beech Creek on the west. This 1,469 acre purchase, for $4,474, from the Andrew F. Smyth headright - November 24, 1841, Patent No. 590, excluded three acres sold to one James F. Walker off of the South West corner and four acres sold to one Jesse F. Walker where he now lives including his houses & Spring.
Note:  This three acre parcel adjoined the northwest corner of the 320 acre James F. Walker Survey. James F. Walker's daughter, Frances Ella, later married Merrett's son, B.B. 'Tang' Barlow.
Merrett Barlow had definitely relocated to Tyler County when he enlisted January 14, 1863, for three months, as a Texas State Trooper in Co. E, 2nd Brigade, at Concord, Texas. He was a private under Captain A.A. Aden, Stationed at Camp Gentry, Concord, Texas. Geo. W. Van Vleck, B.G., inspector and mustering off. R & F 68. Merrett was detailed for artillery at Sabine Pass September 17, 1863 in Captain John Wheat's Company, 1 Reg't Inf., Texas State Troops and gave on January 29, 1864, his age as 37.
Tyler Co. Probate Records:
M.S. Barlow sold on February 09, 1867, at his Tyler Co house, as administrator on the estate of Thomas Barlow, property for cash totaling $200.40.
Tyler Co Probate Records; Deed Record H-173 & 174:
After advertising April 08-15-22-29, 1871 in the News-Boy, a Jasper, Texas weekly newspaper, M.S. Barlow sold May 31, 1871 Thomas Barlow's Tyler Co property at the Woodville, Texas courthouse. The sale was made under said order of sale for the payment of the debts and expenses of administration of said Estate.
Tyler Co Deed Record H-173, 174, 175, 176, 576, 577:
M.S. Barlow sold May 03, 1871, at the Woodville courthouse door, to M.J. Phillips, for $1,451.22, Thomas Barlow's property on the west bank of the Neches River, but bought October 01, 1871 the same property from M.J. Phillips for $1,450. M.S. Barlow sold January 06, 1875 100 acres of this property, for $100, to Thomas Collier, with witnesses S.A. [Sarah Ann] Barlow and Z.C. [Zachariah Cowart 'Zack'] Collier.
Note:  Zack Collier's store, which was built on this property, has been reconstructed at Heritage Village Museum near Woodville, Texas
Apparently Merritt and Nancy C. separated or divorced by 1900, because on June 13, Nancy is living with her widowed son-in-law, Marlin Crow, stating she was widowed, while Merritt is living with son Thomas H. [see #12] on June 14, stating he was widowed!

NARCISSA / NARCISSUS P. BARLOW3, (Thomas2,Thomas1), daughter of Thomas Barlow and Eliza Caldwell, was born c1826, died July 13, 1890, Caddo Parish Louisiana

She married JOHN ROCHELLE RIVES HARRISON, M.D. on July 03, 1845, Lowndes Co Alabama MR 1-475.   The son of Willoughby and Elizabeth 'Rieve' Harrison, he was born March 26, 1824 in Fairfield District South Carolina.

Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Northwest Louisiana, 1890

Dr. John R. R. Harrison is one of the oldest settlers of Caddo Parish, Louisiana, having been a resident of this place since 1846. He was born in Fairfield District, South Carolina, March 26, 1824, his parents Willoughby and Elizabeth 'Rieve' Harrison, being also born there, the former dying in Lowndes Co, Alabama, when the subject of this sketch was four years of age.

He had been a soldier in the War of 1812 and had moved from South Carolina to Alabama shortly after his marriage. His father, Willoughby Harrison, was a South Carolinian, and was a Revolutionary soldier, taking part in many battles. In the State of Alabama, Dr. John R.R. Harrison grew to manhood, but since 1846, as above stated, he has been a resident of Caddo Parish.

He was a student of medicine under Dr. John Hall, in Alabama, and with some additional study after coming to Louisiana, he, in 1854, graduated from the University of New Orleans, and has since practiced in Caddo Parish, nearly half a century, his practice extending over a very large area. He has made a special study of the eye, and during his practice has effected some miraculous cures, a number of his patients being pronounced incurable by New Orleans specialists and the physicians of Shreveport. He has been a very successful financier, and has become the owner of 3,940 acres of fine land, all in Ward 2, and has 600 acres under cultivation.

He was married July 04, 1845, to Miss Narcissus Barlow, whose father, Thomas Barlow, was a Georgian, moving afterward to Alabama. She was born in Georgia, but was reared in Alabama, and died July 13, 1890, having been a member of the Missionary Baptist Church from girlhood. She became the mother of one son, who died during the war, when sixteen years of age.

Dr. Harrison is a member of, and has been deacon in the Missionary Baptist Church, and socially is a Royal Arch Mason, which order he joined in Alabama, prior to coming to Louisiana. He is a member of the Farmers' Alliance, and is a Democrat, politically.

During the late war he was detailed to practice medicine in this parish.

Caddo Parish Deed Book N-807:  Thomas Barlow and wife Talfonfa A., of Lowndes Co Alabama, residing in the state of Alabama, sold December 22, 1860 to John R.R. Harrison, land in township 21, range 15.
Caddo Parish Deed Book G-830: Surely some of this land came from the 320 acres Thomas Barlow purchased April 07, 1852 from William C. Lary, of Harrison Co Texas, for $640, as the east half of S2:T21:R15.

In this letter, contributed by Jane McAshan, but as yet has not been transcribed, written March 1864 from Fredericksburg, Virginia, Judson writes to his mother, Ann Talfonfa, actually his step-mother, but had apparently raised him since his own mother died when he very young.  In this letter he tells her he feels like she is his mother, and he loves her as such.      Page 1      Page 2     Page 3     Page 4
In a letter dated May 1864, Mary Louise Lee writes to her daughter, Cornelia Virginia Barlow.  Spelling is as shown in letter, paragraphs are added to make it easier to follow since no punctuation was used, transcribed by Jane McAshan, who has in her possession, the original of this letter.  Copies of those are included here by clicking page numbers >     Page 1       Page 2
Dear Daughter

I have been looking with anxious expectation to hear from you but all with out avail. I have not heard a word from you scince

Bob Conway came from their, he came by hear and stayed one night. Your Pa brought him from Autaugavill when he came from Prattvill he got home Sunday evening and Bob left on the train Monday so I have not heard from him scince.

We are all well.  I am getting well fast

Fannie and Bud is learning as fast as you ever saw children Bud has been trhough his book four times and nearly through the fifth time and twice by heart it seems like I never will get any more books for them they do need them so bad. Fannie has read all the corse reading untill she has nearly memorised it and has not got any thing else yet.

Puss your Pa has sold 70 acres of land the forty he got from Mr. Parker and 30 of his old track that joined it for $8.33 per acre he sold it to James Abbot of Selma a Coulered man, one of Henry Beckton old friends.

Sue says she wish you would come home. Charley has got the dropsy he does look to be in reched health.

Puss, Tabitha Goodwin has got in a terrible scrape so they are going to have her up in the church next Friday weak when Dave Holly went back to Virginia their were three of four up in the piney woods sent down a box of provissions to their friends and when it got to young Goodwins she had a good many their for dinner and she took out the cakes and pies and ate them so their friends wrote back to them that they didn’t receive them and they talk of haveing redress at law as well as the church.

Mr. Hall of Autaugavill is dead he died some time last weak when he died no one was expecting sutch thing he got up an hour or so before he died and lit a candle.
As far as I can learn we are getting a long pretty well in the war, our side under guideance of the ruler of all good is gaining victory after victory in the trans Miss Department. Frank Murph says that Yanks has got John Murphs negroes and the nuse is incourageing from Virginia and Dalton though we have suffered conciderable in the loss of Gens but we mustt ecknowled that the ways and plans of God is hard for us to find out for he is aiding in these battles and God be praised for what he has done for us I still believe that this war will close before this year closes. I do not believe that Jimie is hurt yet all is wright with him give my love to your Uncle Asbury and family and your self

vii. JOE BAILEY BARLOW, born November 20, 1907, and died January 21, 1996.
He married MABEL BRANDIN.  She was born September 29, 1914, and died February 18, 1988.   Both are buried in Town Bluff Cemetery, Tyler Co Texas
Note that in 1900, Town Bluff, Tyler Co Texas, Benjamin, Thomas H. and Merrit are listed on page 194, while on page 191, I find a Vivien Barlow, age 9, living in the home of her aunt, Ella Collier.    Census Image
In 1910, Vivian is age 19, living with John and Kate Walker, not far from Thomas.  Census Image
In 1920, she is 26, and still living with John and Katherine Walker, but this time she is listed as a step daughter.  Census Image
Can anyone identify this child?    She would have been born c1891.
Death Certificate tells us that Vivian is the daughter of Thomas Barlow and Katherine Middleton.    Could Katherine Middleton be the same as Kate Walker?   Not that in the 1910 census, Kate Marr Barlow  shows that she has borned 7 children, all accounted for will not include Vivian.            DEATH CERTIFICATE

In 1930, I could not locate them, but did find a Perry, age 41, widower, living in the H.H. Russell home in Houston, Harris Co Texas.  [I have often found that widow's and widower's are actually divorced]

Known children of Perry and Maude are:
This is one of those evasive families.  His age should have been 28 in the 1900 census, according to his birthdate, and if it is Perry in this 1930 census, his age should be 48. I searched for anyone, including Maude and the sons who might be a part of this family, anywhere in the U.S., under many spellings, by first and last name, and came up with blanks.    I did find Maude in the 1930 census of Harris Co remarried and with a 10 mth old daughter, but the boys have left home.
