RICHARD BARLOW2, (Thomas1) son of Thomas Barlow and Elizabeth Roscoe, was born 28 December 1784, in Brunswick Co Virginia. Richard Barlow, a 50 year deacon, died 12 May 1864 of dropsy at his residence near Indian Springs, Butts Co Georgia. He contributed to the endowment of Mercer University. He is buried in Barlow Cemetery, Indian Springs, Butts Co Georgia. His estate was probated 06 June 1864 in Butts Co Georgia.

He married 1) MARTHA HOLLINGSWORTH, daughter of George Hollingsworth. Martha was born 19 January 1790 in Edgefield District, South Carolina and died 29 June 1851 in Butts Co Georgia, burial in Barlow Family Cemetery, Indian Springs, Butts Co Georgia.

Received from the estate of his father: Slave: Rebeckah and her children, worth $380, and owed the estate $55.62 ½.

Clinton Barlow states: Richard Barlow moved with his family from Virginia to North Carolina, thence to South Carolina, and finally to Laurens County, Georgia. He became a wealthy planter and slave owner in Laurens County, where he, together with his father, Thomas and brother James, were founding members of the Poplar Springs Baptist Church and later founded the Rocky Creek Baptist Church. For over fifty years Richard Barlow served as deacon in the Baptist Church and contributed liberally to the founding of Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. Shortly after 1840, Richard Barlow moved from Laurens County to Butts County, Georgia, where he purchased a 700 acre tract of land that would become and is still referred to as the "Barlow Plantation." In fact, the bulk of the land that comprised Richard Barlow's farm remains intact today. As in Laurens County, Richard became a well respected citizen and slave owner in Butts County. Besides the Barlow Plantation, Richard Barlow owned much property in Butts County, mainly in the southern region near the town of Indian Springs. It was on one of his tracts of land just south of the Springs that he established the Barlow Cemetery which still exists and is one of the oldest in the county. In addition to members of the Barlow and related families that are buried in the old family graveyard, there are several of the loyal Barlow slaves that are buried near the rear of the cemetery. Incidentally, there are many black Barlow's today who are descendents of these Barlow servants who adopted the Barlow name after the close of the War Between the States.

Another Father in Israel has fallen! Brother Richard Barlow is no more. He died suddenly of dropsy of the heart, at his residence near Indian Springs, Butts County, Ga, on 12th May 1864, in his 80th year. He was born in Virginia, moved to Lawrence (sic) County, Ga., in early life, but for 24 years has lived in and near this place.

Bro. Barlow was not an ordinary man.

…But for 54 years he wore the adorning profession of Christ, …

For fifty years he filled the office of a deacon well, and was for many years a delegate to the Association. Having a liberal fortune, his house was ever open to God’s people especially his ministers. He contributed liberally to the endowment of Mercer University.

Bro. Barlow raised a large and interesting family of children. The aged and infirm wife is bereft as the vine from which the storm has driven away the strong oak around which it clung for support.

Died, on the 29th day of June last, at the residence of her husband, near the Indian Springs Butts County ~ in the 61rst year of her age, Mrs. Martha Barlow, wife of Mr. Richard Barlow. The deceased was a native of Edgefield District, South Carolina; resided for many years after her marriage, in the County of Laurens, Ga., but for the last 12 or 14 years near the Indian Springs in Butts County.

A large circle of acquaintances and numerous relatives and friends, to whom the many virtues, kind attentions, and charitable offices of this excellent lady had endeared her sorrowfully sympathized with her bereaved husband and children, in their loss.

She died a pious, believing christian, full of hope and confidence in a bright and blissful immortality beyond the grave. As she had lived for more than 20 years, she died in full faith, a worthy esteemed and exemplary member of the Baptist Church ~ loved by all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. Her death has left a void, scarcely to be filled, and a loss surely lamented by her family, friends and neighbors.

Everybody who has visited Indian Springs knows the genial accommodating and efficient Ed. Elder, who had charge of the Elder House at that famous watering place. We learn that he has taken a position in the office of the new Hotel Lanier, in Macon. The proprietors and the traveling public are to be congratulated on the acquisition of Mr. Elder to the Lanier. He will see that all the guests of the house are satisfied, if it is in the power of man to do it. – Evening Capitol

Jackson Argus - Butts County Week of November 18, 1898
Ed. A. Elder Dead In Toledo, O., on Friday afternoon last that prince of splendid men, Ed. A. Elder of Indian Spring, breathed his last. He was one of the best known and most popular hotel man in the state. He closed the Elder House on the 6th of October, and with Mrs. Elder went West for a short season of rest before going to Florida for the winter. At Toledo he was seized with a chill and Typhoid fever followed. He was unable to stand the desperate attack and sank as above stated. The remains reached Flovilla Saturday night and the funeral services were conducted at Indian Spring on Sunday following. Mr. Elder was greatly admired for the many noble virtues of head and heart, and his death is the cause of almost universal sorrow. When he left here he was a fine specimen of physical manhood, and his death is, therefore, quite a shock to our people.
The Argus has never known a more popular hotel man than Ed. Elder. He has been in active charge of the Elder House for 20 years.
Since childhood the most devoted friendship has existed between Mr. Elder and Mr. H. L. Daughtry of the place, and Mr. Daughtry says he has never known a truer man to his friends than Ed. Elder.
To Mrs. Elder and the other near relatives, The Argus offers its sincere condolence.

He married 1) AMANDA R. CAIN on 23 November 23, 1854 in Butts Co Georgia, ceremony performed by W.G. McMichael, MG. The daughter of Jacob T. Cain, she was born c1834, and died 02 July 1856.
He married 2) WINNIE ANN WILLIAMSON before 1860. The daughter of Nathan Camp Williamson and Irena Summerlin, she had been married to Thomas H. Stallsworth prior to marrying Eldridge.

Died of consumption, at Indian Springs, Ga, on the 2nd July, in her 18th year, Mrs. Amanda R., wife of Mr. Eldridge Barlow, and eldest daughter of Mr. J.T. Cane, late of Alabama.

Death at all times and at any age, comes as a terrible monster, marking his course with sighs, tears and sorrows; blasting all earthly hopes, ending all earthly interests and severing the tenderest and most endearing relatives. But alas! When he selects for his object one in the bloom of youth, possessing so many lovely traits of character; tearing a young and affectionate wife from the embraces of a devoted husband ~ dragging a young and doting mother from the caresses and support of a tender and first-born infant, as he has done in the subject of this notice; he, then, comes clothed in the majesty of terrors and the triumphs of his victory.

But has not a victory been proclaimed over this dread monster? Yes, thanks be to God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Mrs. Barlow will be missed among a large circle of her young friends and youthful companions. Society generally has lost an ornament, both in her personal and moral character, that will not soon be replaced, but alas! In her __ family will be left a void, and it will sustain an irreparable loss which none but a heart~broken husband and the tender babe can realize.

But the assurances which she gave of her preparation for an abundant entrance into the kingdom of God, should dry their tears and stop their sorrows. Yes, she is missed in society and long will she be missed at home; but she has gone to swell the cloud of witnesses for Jesus in that glory world, where "Sickness and sorrow, pain and death, are felt and feared no more."

Can anyone identify John J. Barlow? Is he the infant son of Eldridge and Amanda, as mentioned in her obituary?

Butts Court of Ordinary June Term 1857

It appearing to the Court that Eldridge Barlow administrator on the estate of John J. Barlow, and also the administrator on the estate of Alford G. Cain and the Guardian of Elmira A.C. Cane who were the heirs at law of Jacob T. Cain late deceased of the State of Alabama under the will of the said Jacob T. Cain, the said property being now in the possession of the said Eldridge Barlow administrator and Guardian as aforesaid has made application for the appointment of persons for the purpose of distributing the estate of said deceased among the distributees of said estate, no notice being necessary as the said Barlow represents the parties in interest either as administrator or guardian. It is therefore ordered that John Goodman, Britton Buttrill, and Asa Buttrill freeholders of said county, be and they hereby authorized to make distribution of said estate among the distributees entitled thereto agreeably to the statute in such cases made and provided the said Eldridge Barlow being the sole heir to the estate of John J. Barlow and the said Elmira A.C. Cane being the sole heir to the estate of Alford G. Cain.

To date, this notation in the September Term-1839, Butts Co. Superior Court Minutes, and a subsequent appeal entry (March Term 1840) are the only legal records found of the divorce of Nathan C. Williamson and his first wife Irena (Summerlin) Williamson. Nathan had married Agness Thompson June 25, 1840, and many folks, me included, had simply assumed that Irena had died. Since Agness had apparently raised step-children Thomas J. and Winney A. Williamson, it was easy to believe that Irena was buried in Butts Co. at the "homeplace", near husband Nathan, in the Williamson / Knowles family cemetery. However, research into Nathan's father's estate in Jackson Co. GA led to these two court records, and many other family facts. (See the depositions of Jeese T. Gunn and George L. Thompson on this site; as well as other Williamson-related information, here, and on the Jackson Co. site)

In 1840 Irena (Summerlin) Williamson evidently was listed nearby in Henry Co., but by 1850 she had moved to Carroll Co. GA, to the household of Henry Summerlin (a cousin? - whom she later married?). Her Butts Co. children remained with Nathan and Agness. Thomas J. Williamson married Eliza Ann Ingram Dec. 23, 1852. Winney (Ann?) Williamson married 1st - Thomas H. Stallsworth; then Eldridge Barlow -- they moved to Quitman Co Georgia.

Additional Comments: We may never learn of the details which led to the divorce. However, records from the John Williamson Jr. estate in Jackson Co. are quite tantalizing. We learned that Nathan became crippled by falling in a well in Butts Co. No dates were given, but he returned to his father's home in Jackson Co. with his two children, and two small slaves (likely "Ben" & Jack" whom he had inherited from his grandfather, John Williamson Sr., in 1831). He remained in Jackson Co. for at least two years! There were questions about paying "board" in his father's estate records; and other records noting tuition for the children. But, there was no mention of Irena! Evidently, she stayed in Butts Co., with "Rachel"-the presumed mother of Ben & Jack. (See the John W. Moon deposition which mentions Nathan's crippling).

MAHALIA A. BARLOW3, (Richard2,Thomas1) daughter of Richard Barlow and Martha Hollingsworth, was born 1828, and died 09 May 1898, burial in Barlow family Cemetery, Butts Co Georgia, apparently in an unmarked grave. [obituary] In the 1860 census of Butts Co Georgia, Mahala Morris, age 33, is listed in the home of her father, Richard Barlow.

She married 1) SAMUEL MORRIS of Butts County on 06 August 1854 in Butts Co Georgia, ceremony performed by James Carter, MG. He enlisted in Company B, 30th Regiment Georgia Infantry, C.S.A., and died in the war.

She married 2) SAMUEL RIDGWAY of Butts County on 31 May 1863. The son of James Ridgway and Elizabeth Tennison, he was born 28 December 1800 in Elbert Co Georgia, and died 26 January 1884 in Butts Co Georgia, burial in Fellowship Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Butts Co Georgia. He is buried beside his first wife, Charlotte.

We feel sad to chronicle the death of Mrs. Mahalie Ridgeway which occurred at the home of her son George on last Monday morning.    She was a devout Christian and held out faithful until the end. She leaves two sons, Jim Morris and George Ridgeway, to mourn the loss. The bereaved relatives have our sincere sympathies.

Mrs. Mahaly Ridgeway an old citizen of Butts County, died Monday at the home of her son Mr. George Ridgeway.    Mrs. Ridgeway leaves many relatives and friends who regret her death exceedingly. Her remains were interred at the old family burying ground Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Married, at the residence of the bride's father, November 10th Miss Leila Elder to Mr. M.A. Lindsay. Miss Leila is a charming young lady, the eldest daughter of Mr. And Mrs. W. A. Elder Jr. She is possessed of many beautiful accomplishments and fine traits of womanhood. She was an ornament of society, but she shone most conspicuously, and adored most beautifully her home circle. Never was there a more dutiful daughter or more affectionate and loving sister. Mr. Lindsay is too well known in Butts County to need an introduction. Perhaps the most popular man in the whole county. As Passenger Agent of I.S. & F.R.R. and Florida excursion fame he has endeared himself to all they kindness, affable and genial maters.
The marriage ceremony was performed by Mr. Tumlin a solemn and impressive manner.
The bride was attired in a lovely dress of cream albatross in princess style with flowing train. The groom in conventional black.
After partaking of an elegant repast the wedding gown was changed for a handsome traveling suit and "The two hearts that beat as one" went on their bridal tour to Cincinnati, Chicago and other points of interest.
They were the recipients of many gifts useful and ornamental
The ceremony occurred at 4 o'clock p.m. The parlors were beautifully lighted which gave a soft glow and mellow radiance.
As the bride was leaving the room she tossed back her handsome bouquet, which was eagerly scrambled for, as the fortunate scratcher was to be the next bride. Miss Minnie Parham was the winner.
The host of friends of Mr. And Mrs. Lindsay wish for them long life, health, wealth and happiness.

She married GEORGE PERCIVAL CORNELL, SR. on 11 November 1875 in Butts Co Georgia. The son of John J. Cornell and Sarah S., he was born 11 June 1849, and died 29 August 1910, burial in the Barlow Family Cemetery, Indian Springs, Butts Co Georgia. After Lucine's death, George married her sister, Texas c1898.

TEXAS L. ELDER4, and George were married 08 Oct 1897 in Indian Spring, Butts Co Georgia. She was born 08 August 1853 in Georgia, and died 06 November 1918, burial in the Barlow Family Cemetery, Indian Springs, Butts Co Georgia. She bore no children, but apparently raised Lucinda's children after her death, and Texas' subsequent marriage to George. Note that in the following article, James grandmother is referred to as 'Texas Elder'

OLD INDIAN SPRINGS HOTEL BRINGS BACK GRACIOUS ERA

The Elder Hotel Built in 1903, Drew Resort Visitors from Many States Indian Springs, Georgia
The large, white, two story hotel with green shutters and a long porch stands on a hilltop guarded by stately oaks. I stood on a bed of dry leaves and gazed fondly at the Elder Hotel, the last of Indian Springs’ five resort hotels to survive. For a moment I felt as if I were admiring the beautiful face of a dear old woman known for her great charm and character. She has known the good life, but time has been kind to her.
James E. Cornell, 58, is the owner of the Elder Hotel, built in 1903 by his grandmother, Mrs. Texas Elder, in an era when Indian Springs also boasted of the Wigwam Hotel, Foy Hotel and Bryans House, and earlier, the Calumet Hotel.
Early in the 20th century, Indian Springs, with its famed, mineral-rich waters, drew thousands of persons from many states each summer. They arrived in horse drawn buggies and on trains to spend a week, a month and in some instances the whole summer.
The Elder Hotel which will be open 90 days beginning June 15, used to have 75 rooms, but the number has been reduced to 52.
A painter was working on the front porch when Cornell and I arrived, the owner lives in a brick house next door and we stepped from the warm outside temperatures into a big, cool lobby with high ceilings. In the center of the lobby were rows of 48 Brumby rocking chairs, bought for $16 each just after World War I, which will be moved to the porch in June. “Walk from one end of the porch to the other and back 10 times and you will have walked one mile,” said Cornell. I imagined how delightful it would be to rock in one of the handsome chairs on the porch in the cool of the evening after a fried chicken supper. The wide, long halls with high ceilings were quite conspicuous in this age when no space is wasted in new hotels and motels.
Cornell showed me several rooms on both floors, explaining they have been modernized a bit over the years. “Two sets of baths have gone in this hotel,” he said. “Back in 1925 my father put in old type tubs with legs on the bottom, and after World War II he changed to the built-in type tubs with the tile baths.
“The dining rooms and television room are air conditioned, but only 20 or more rooms have air conditioning. A lot of people who come here don’t’ like air conditioning. They like to open the windows.” Cornell said that Indian Springs usually is several degrees cooler than either Macon or Atlanta in the summer and winter.
In the early years of operation, the Elder Hotel charged just $3 a day per person for a room, and this included three meals. “I can remember when I was young when rates were $12.50 a week including all meals, and this was for seven days,” he said.
His father, James E. Cornell, Sr. said the hotel was especially popular among honeymooners and many returned years later on vacations. “My father told me that a couple came in one day and the man said, “We want room No. 15,” said Cornell. “He said, No. 15 is not one of my best rooms” “The man said, No, we want No. 15.” My father said it was vacant and they could have it. The man said, “We were married 20 years ago, we had that room, and we want it again.”
When the hotel was built for about $75,000 in 1903, the ladies’ and the men’s bathrooms were located at the end of the halls. This was in an era when that line about the Saturday night bath was a fact, not a joke, for some folks, who found a daily scrubbing rather difficult to arrange.
Walking slowly down a long hall, Cornell said, “This hotel represents an era that has passed. Many people today don’t now about that era. It brings you back to the country, a relaxed atmosphere, with its charm and character. “It offers something different. You are used to the motel chains, the same furniture and design. If you were in a motel room, you wouldn’t know if you were in Seattle or Atlanta.”
The late Senator Walter George of Vienna, Ga., was among the many resort visitors who enjoyed games of bridge with friends. Cornell remembers when Georgia Governor Ellis Arnall used to come here on summer weekends. “People still enjoy playing bridge on summer nights said Cornell, “and they like bingo and shuffleboard. Sometimes the people got together to put on plays at night.” Among the popular features of Indian Springs State Park are the lake and beach, miniature golf, nature trails, bowling alleys, picnic grounds, and of course, the sulphur water with its reputed curative powers for stomach and kidney problems.
Who is the Elder Hotel’s oldest regular guest? “A fellow in Miami is now 88 years old and he has been coming here since he was a small boy,” said Cornell. “He brings his nurse and stays a month or six weeks.” I’d like to have one penny for each hours that fellow has rocked on the porch.

The subject of the sketch, H. L. Daughtry, was born at Indian Spring in 1859 and has been living in our county very nearly all the time since. He has been in the mercantile business ever since 1875, and has lived in Jackson for six years. He was married in 1887 to a daughter of Dr. J.H. Bryans, of Indian Spring. He is now general manager and buyer for the clothing, hats and gents furnishing department of the Jackson Mercantile Company, and goes to New York and other Eastern markets to buy goods for that popular firm every year. The Star Store is as widely known as any firm in Jackson or middle Georgia, and its popularity is brought about as much by the efforts of Mr. Hampton I Daughtry as any other member of the firm.

Mr. Daughtry stands in the front rant of Jackson's busiest businessmen. Socially he is a favorite with all whose acquaintance he has made. He has the unbounded confidence of or people, many of who have bought their goods from him for a number of years. He is Worshipful Master of St. John's Lodge No. 45, F. & A.M., which shows the esteem in which he is held by his brethren of the mystic tie, and he is held in the same high esteem by his friends everywhere.

Secretary of State Henry Lewis Stimson last week frowned over this cablegram from Havana:
STIMSON WASHINGTON ARRESTED THIS AFTERNOON ON FALSE CHARGES HELD IN PRINCIPE FORTRESS WITHOUT OPPORTUNITY TO FURNISH BAIL BARLOW
Secretary Stimson did not have to call an assistant to tell him who Barlow was. Only too 'familiar was he with the long-standing controversies between Joseph E. Barlow, 67, U. S. citizen, 30 years a resident of Havana, and the Cuban Government.
Only too well did he know that Mr. Barlow has been pressing a nine-million-dollar claim which has caused more alarums and excursions at the State Department than have the affairs of any other U. S. investor abroad. Mr. Barlow laid claim to 32 city blocks in the heart of Havana taken from him by the Cuban Government. His claim was based on a 400-year-old Spanish grant bounding the property ''as far as a dog's bark could be heard."
Cuban courts and the U. S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee have upheld his demand for compensation. The Cuban Government has refused to pay. Secretary Stimson also recalled that Mr. Barlow once threatened to "bust on the nose" his predecessor, Frank Billings Kellogg, because that old gentleman did not seem interested enough in his case. With only a small delay Statesman Stimson despatched instructions to the U. S. Embassy at Havana to inquire into Mr. Barlow's arrest, to discover if "his surroundings were bearable." Before this order could reach Havana, Mr. Barlow was out of jail. He was released on $500 bail, furnished by his official accusers. The charge against him was grand larcency. Senora Vincenta Garcia had bought some lots from him, had failed to pay for them. When he sought to recover them, she charged she was being cheated. The Judicial Police advised him that "Cuba would feel happier if he would return to the U. S. and stay there, thus avoiding trouble and unpleasantness." Mr. Barlow took the advice, left for Washington prepared to agitate his claims with redoubled vigor.
Said Senator Borah: "Outrage!" Said Senator King: "OUTRAGE!!" Secretary Stimson did not say "outrage" but he set to work afresh on the whole Barlow case, with the hope of closing it out and forever eradicating a small patch of international prickly heat.

When U. S. Ambassador Harry Frank Guggenheim arrived in Cuba, one of the crankiest, most vexatious problems he found waiting settlement was a $9,000,000 real estate claim of U.S. citizen Joseph E. Barlow, long-time Havana resident and land promoter (TIME, April 29 et seq.).
For ten years Mr. Barlow, at times irascible, had been pressing the U.S. Government for justice from Cubans he claimed had stolen his property.
Last week Ambassador Guggenheim thought he had found a method of settlement. Citizen Barlow balked at the arrangement. Citizen Barlow claims that in 1919 he bought swamp acres in what is now the business centre of Havana, developed them with streets, sewers, watermains; that one Pedro Gomez Mena. in connivance with then President Zayas of Cuba, seized the land, formed Gomez Mena Land Co.; that Cuban courts had upheld the Barlow titles; that officers of the land company as Cuban Congressmen were immune to arrest and prosecution; that therefore the court orders against them could not be executed. Ambassador Guggenheim had induced Gomez Mena Land Co. to arbitrate with Citizen Barlow. Citizen Barlow was to choose one Cuban arbitrator. The land company was to choose another from a group of three to be selected by John William Davis, onetime U. S. Ambassador to Great Britain. A third was to be selected by the other two or by the World Court if they failed to agree.
Cranky, suspicious, Citizen Barlow objected. He insisted that each of the proposed Cuban arbiters "is a close friend of President Machado and his cronies;" that Mr. Davis was a schoolmate of Rafael Sanchez Aballi, son-in-law of President Machado, leaser of an amusement park in "Barlow" properties; that U. S. justice was not to be expected from any third arbiter of Spanish extraction selected by the World Court.

His second wife was Clar Mae (Roberts) Leak who was Charles William Leak (my Fathers Mother) she died when Charles William Leak was nine months of age in 1932. The life of Pascal Buren Leak was cut short due to experiencing extreme frost bite in the deep trenches of France and Germany and worse being mustard gassed by the Germans in World War One Pascal Buren Leak was Drafted into the United States Army 162nd Infantry Rainbow Division as his Veterans Foot stone so states for any and all to see, After WWI Pascal returned home and was discharged in 1918 with a 25% military disability. Both Pascal and Clar Mae Leak are buried at New Smyrna Cemetery in Paulding Co Georgia.
