The Family of William and Dicey Barlow
Conecuh and Monroe Co Alabama

+ Larger Font | + Smaller Font
1.
WILLIAM BARLOW1, was born c1802 in Richland District of South Carolina and died November 29, 1861, in Mobile Co Alabama, exactly 3 weeks after going into service.  William and Elias Barlow are said to be the sons of William E. Barlow,

He married DICEY c1823.   She was born 17 March 1799, and died 20 March 1899.  Her maiden name is unknown.
DIED AT 100 YEARS OLD
Mrs. Dicey Barlow, of Mt. Union, died on Tuesday at the unusual age of 100 years and three days. Mrs. Barlow was born on March 17, 1799, and had she lived until next January she would have lived in three centuries. She had enjoyed remarkably good health up to four or five years ago.

From Edson Barlow's military records:
William Barlow, Corporal, Co H 23rd AL Infantry, organized at Montgomery Co Alabama November 05, 1861, surrendered at Vicksburg Mississippi July 04, 1863, paroled later in month and declared exchanged November 1863, consolidated with the 31st and 46th Infantry Regiments and designated as the 23rd Infantry Regiment Consolidated at Smithfield North Carolina April 09, 1865.
He was 5 feet 9 inches tall, had blue eyes, gray hair and dark complexion.
This is to verify that there is a record of the death of Corporal William Barlow, white male, age 55, who expired December 01, 1861, in Mobile. The cause of death is listed as "Typhoid Fever". The Physician's name was T. Mattingly. The body was "sent up the county for Interment." There is no certificate on file.

William and Elias Barlow are said to be the son's of William E. Barlow born c1776, but no proof has been found.   (Who is this Wm E. Barlow, born 1776?)  DNA test results posted June 2013 proves that Elias B. Barlow) is a direct descendant of William Barlow of Robeson Co NC. My own thoughts are that they are sons of John Barlow as mentioned next:
I find a John Barlow in the 1840 Conecuh Co Alabama census.  He and his wife are aged between 70-80.  They have in the home 2 females age 5-10, and 3 females age 20-30.   Census Image    Could he be the father of Elias and William?

A Margaret Barlow, age 35, born in South Carolina, with a son, William, age 17, born in Alabama, lives next door to William and Dicey in the 1850 census, and nearby throughout the years, but nobody has yet suggested a relationship between the families. Perhaps she is the widow of a deceased brother of William, even a widow of Branson Barlow? Only a few more doors away, a Sarah Barlow, age 38, also born in South Carolina, is living with her sons, Theodore, age 5, and Rufus, age 3, no relationship suggested here either.     Census Image

Curiously, William Barlow, son of Branson, with whom we feel sure a relationship exist, but yet to is proven, has daughters named Margaret and Sarah, both of whom are said to be married to Williamson's, I have been unable to locate either of them in any census ...see more notes under Branson Barlow... While this is not any further evidence proving the relationship, it may be a further clue.    DNA tests from each of these families could prove those relationships.

Enclosed in an article on the Health Report for Conecuh County by Dr. A.A. McKittrick, Health Officer in 1889 and published in THE STAR, a early newspaper in Conecuh County. The letter of names from Old Town District was written by W.B. Shaver of Herbert, Ala. He was Dr. Shaver, and served on the Medical Board with Dr. McKittrick. He said in his forward that 'I have taken the pains to find out about all the persons that are in Old Town Beat No. 9 that are sixty years old and upward. Both white and black, male and female. Below I give a list of names with age. Signed respectfully, W.B.Shaver"   Included is:  Mrs. Dicey Barlow, age 98

He may have come here to Conecuh Co shortly after the 1840 census. He was not in Conecuh County in 1830 or 1840. William Barlow first shows up in Conecuh County Alabama in the 1850 U.S. Census. His occupation was listed as carpenter and farmer.   One record referred to him as "Rev. Billy Barlow, Methodist Minister"

Family Bible Record Bible owned by wife of Clyde Haveard, son of Mary Walther Haveard, daughter of Dicey Elizabeth Hart Walther, daughter of Mary Ann Barlow and Josiah Hart, now in possession of Barbara Ashworth of Berrydale, Florida.  The Bible gives Mary Ann's surname as Barlow.
Children of Mary Ann Barlow and Josiah Hart as listed in the Haveard Bible: Dicey Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, Fronia, Cornelia Ann, Martha, Bud, William.
The 1850 and 1860 censuses listed the children as: Nancy, Chacey, (these girls from a previous marriage according to Barbara Martin), Sarah, Dicey, Mary, Ellen, Jay L. 'Bud', William R. Which was Fronia, Cornelia Ann or Martha? Did they die young?)  (see new information below.*) Mary Ann followed naming patterns rigidly. She named a daughter after each of her sisters: Nancy, Sarah, Cornelia Ann and Dicey Elizabeth, and one after herself. The other daughter was named for Josiah’s sister, Chacey. Her first son was named for his father - J. L. The second sons was obviously named for his two grandfathers - William Barlow and Robert Hart.

Barbara Martin writes: 08 October 1873, Josiah L. Hart sold his 320 acres in S18, T5, R14 for just $10 to D. J. Foshee of Covington Co. Was there a family connection? Foshees were neighbors on each side of Josiah in the 1860s and 1870s. Bk. O, p. 317 By 1889, he had homesteaded property on S8 (Rome), T2, R14 Covington Co. that he had been living on for 4 years. He reported that he was a farmer and worked from time to time as the overseer for John I. Dixon. Mr. Dixon had first attempted to homestead the land, but he sold his right to Josiah. Prior to moving on that land, Josiah and Mary had lived nearby and farmed.

His death date was found in "Indian Wars Pensions 1892-1926", V. I, p. 657, by Virgil D. White. Found in Brooklyn Baptist Cemetery records: In memory of Mary Ann, wife of R.L. HART (Should be J.L. Hart)  May 15, 1824 August 18, 1895   Next grave: Unmarked - Was this the grave of Josiah?

Information from Barbara Carpenter Martin at Rootsweb World Connect: Josiah Hart served in the Indian War of 1837, following the Indian attack on his Uncle Josiah's family as well as on his father's family. (Hart, Josiah L., Pouncey's Co., Blair's Batt'n, AL mil, Private; Hart, Josiah L. Capt. Pouncey's Co., Wellborn's Reg't AL Mtd. Vols. (3 months 1837, Private). His brother, Moses, also served, as did either his father Robert or his brother Robert. Then he also enlisted in Captain Ledbetter's Company of Wellborn's Alabama Mounted Militia. This unit served during the Second Seminole Indian War. This unit was founded in Dale County, Alabama in 1837. At this time the Seminole Indians from nearby Florida were attacking the lower region of Alabama. Josiah was honorably discharged at Tampa Bay, Florida. He received a 160 acres land warrant for his service, bounty land #37494-80-'55. He applied for a pension in 1892 "by reason of old age". At the time of his death, he was receiving $8 a month. Source: "Declaration for Indian War Survivor's Pension", 1892, Cert. #2368 According to Grandpa Will Walther, his grandfather Josiah Hart, a son of Robert, was injured in either the Indian attack or the war. He bore a deep scar inflicted by an Indian's weapon. (Passed on by Earl Walther)

I was unable to locate Josiah or Mary in 1880 ... Susan

In 1900, Josiah was living with his son Jay in Pine Grove, Escambia Co Alabama.  Oddly, the enumerator recorded that he was b. in France as were his parents and that he arrived here in 1818 and was naturalized. This is impossible. This record was clearly our Josiah, who definitely had a son of this age named Jay. The neighbors were even the same as from the 1870 census when Josiah was enumerated in that spot (as Joseph, with Jay in the household). The names of neighbors James Palmer, Napolion Dixon and Daniel Phelps were the same in the later censuses, and other family names present at both times were McGowan, Jordan, Mansell, Blow and Phelps. Another interesting twist is that Josiah's daughter Dicey's father-in-law, George Walther, did indeed come from France and was born there in 1818. Did somebody in the family get his story confused with Josiah Hart's story?
Children of Josiah and Mary are:
6 i. DICEY ELIZABETH HART born c1848 in Alabama, and died 1924 in Santa Rosa Co Florida, burial in Fuqua Cemetery, Brewton, Escambia Co Alabama.

viii. HARRIET SAFRONIA 'FRONIA' HART, born 06 December 1867 in Brewton, Escambia Co Alabama, and died 13 January 1946 in Lakeland, Polk Co Florida
Information from Guy Power, May 2012:   My ancestor is Harriet Safronia 'Fronie' Hart who married Henry Key Hodges. Our family history says her parents are Joe Hart and Mary Barlow.   She is probably the "Fronia" you mention on your website.  My grandfather and namesake, Guy C. Hodges was born in 1901; Family history says his mother was 1/2 Indian. Before he died in 1974 he said his ggggrandfather was supposedly Pushtamaha. He was always ashamed of being called an Indian and would argue he wasn't ... until before he died. His older brother & sister always said their mother was Indian.   Family lineage as follows:

NANCY JANE BARLOW2 (WILLIAM1) was born October 1830 in Conecuh Co Alabama, and died 1922, burial in either Old Town Cemetery, or Sepulga, Conecuh Co Alabama.

She married JAMES SHEFFIELD 21 February 1856 in Conecuh Co Alabama.   The son of William Sheffield and Dianna McFarland, (per David Rogers), he was born c1832-1834 in Alabama, and died from injuries sustained in the Civil War

James died from injuries sustained in the Civil War while fighting in the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia.
Checking military records for the Civil War, I find several James Sheffields in the Confederacy of Alabama, though I have not seen full records, I would suggest he may be James D. Sheffield who served as a Private in Co B of the 38th Alabama Volunteer Infantry from Wilcox County under Captain Wm. R. Welch. He died at the hospital in Ft. Gaines on May 20, 1862.

Elizabeth Howell is part Creek Indian.
It is of the opinion that those placing claims during the 1950's with the Poarch Creek Indian's were unable to provide the proper proof of Indian lineage. As a result an attorney was hired. (per Eliza Barlow Edge) The attorney died before the case was closed. It is not known who the attorney was or if he received any money for his services or if he left any records. The interested parties evidently did not pursue this matter. After a careful search of the claims that were filed and accepted, we can only surmise that as far as the Barlow / Howell Indian claims are concerned, there was simply not enough proof at the time of application.
In the 1910 Monroe County Alabama a special Indian census was taken again. On this census Elizabeth Howell Barlow is enumerated with her husband and two of her sons, Dan and John. Her daughter, Jane Barlow Harris and her family are also named. It is interesting to note that Elizabeth's son William Alexander Barlow was enumerated one month later on the regular census in the same precinct. His race was shown to be white. Elizabeth Howell Barlow's Indian blood quantum was given as 1/4 Creek Indian. Her father was shown as white. This would make Elizabeth's mother, Pricilla, 1/2 Indian, and if the Susan Parker named in the 1850 census with the Howell family was in fact Pricilla's mother, as thought, she would have been full blooded Indian
Children of Lewis and Elizabeth are:

Barlow Home  House 2  House 3  House 4  House 5

The following letters were found in the house, above, thought to be the old BARLOW home, located in a small community called Cohassett just off U.S. highway 84. approximately 1 mile before the Covington county line by James Windham.  Farm equipment belongs to present owner.
Note: There are some difference in opinion as to whether this is actually the Barlow house, as it is shown as the Barrow house in some documents.
